US troops enter Poland, 1st deployment at Russia's doorstep

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — American soldiers rolled into Poland on Thursday, fulfilling a dream some Poles have had since the fall of communism in 1989 to have U.S. troops on their soil as a deterrent against Russia.

(Snip)

U.S. and other Western nations have carried out exercises on NATO's eastern flank in past years, but the new deployment — which includes some 3,500 U.S. troops — marks the first-ever continuous deployment to the region by a NATO ally.

There are fears, however, that the enhanced security could eventually be undermined by the pro-Kremlin views of President-elect Donald Trump.

Poland and the Baltic states also feel threatened by Russia's recent deployment of nuclear-capable Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad, the Russian territory wedged between Poland and Lithuania.

(Snip)

"These actions threaten our interests, our security," President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday. "Especially as it concerns a third party building up its military presence near our borders. It's not even a European state."

(Snip)

Poles still feel betrayed by Obama's "reset" with Russia early on in his administration, which involved abandoning plans for a major U.S. missile defense system in Poland and replacing it with plans for a less ambitious system, still not in place.

(Snip)

The armored brigade combat team arriving in Poland hails from Fort Carson, Colorado. The troops arrived last week in Germany and are gathering in Poland before units will fan out across seven countries from Estonia to Bulgaria. A headquarters unit will be stationed in Germany. After nine months they will be replaced by another unit.

In a separate but related mission, NATO will also deploy four battalions to its eastern flank later this year, one each to Poland and the three Baltic states. The U.S. will also lead one of those battalions.

"Yet Putin invading his neighbors and murdering thousands isn’t a threat? Quite a pretzel you have wrapped yourself into there."

We've heard that before about Iraq, and Iraq didn't have nukes. What to do? Take our choice of pretzels? Regular versus jalapeno?

Meanwhile, the televangelists are talking about Gog and Magog and Armageddon, and Syria and Iran and Russia and Israel, and somehow their apocalyptic scenarios don't seem so remote from the actual headlines.

Russians running Mexico would be entertaining.

They couldn't possibly do a worse job than the Mexicans are doing.

We could be right on the doorstep of Gog-Magog.

Iran has $150+ billion dollars that has come from BamBam.

Of course, they “promised” to do nothing for 10 years.

Well, hail Neville Chamberlain.

Lotsa folks have different ideas about things. One thing is certain: Iran and her allies suffer greatly.

I remember Georgia was invaded. Bush parked one of our ships right next to the Russians in Port in the Black Sea. We didn't have to say anything to Russia, they respected us then. But they got the message.

I'm no Bush fan either.

Not being honest about Missile defense was the issue. Poland would actually make sense if the risk was a missile from Iran.
There weren’t enough missile batteries planned to stop a Russian attack.
That being said, we claimed the missile defense was not aimed at Russia. The answer was to simply include them in it, and install some batteries that would protect Moscow from this same Mideast threat.

In any case, defense against this type of missile threat is good old boring MAD. Or with Iran or Pakistan, more like a one sided MAD. They launch against the Russians or EU, they get wiped off the earth. The Brits, French, and Russians have a superiority, both qualitatively and quantitatively, that the middle east could never match.

What can 3,500 troops do?

You would be surprised. Few thousand of determined warriors chased Soviets fro Afghanistan. Russians are bullies, and therefore cowards.

Every Pole will fight if Russia invades Poland, and the Russians know it.

“Russia has been on the right track these last 25 years, while we have been going backwards.”

How can Russia be on the “right track” when they have a per capita GDP that is about equal to Kazakhstan?

How can Russia be on the “right track” when the male life expectancy is 64.7 which is exactly the same as Gabon?

How can Russia be on the “right track” when Russia has the highest abortion rate in the world?

Where did they pull that line from - I bet it can be used as fertilizer....

Kind of "funny" that Obama decides to flaunt our strength (even in a minimal way) at this juncture of his failed presidency....

Just my opinion but experience has taught me that the beauty of blonde Polish women aren’t worth the emotional drama they cause.

It can, but can you imagine the controversy it would cause if Trump does?

Trump will use the carrot and stick approach with Russia. All Obama tried to use was a stick (and a weak one at that).

Yes, Trump will use the correct carrot and stick approach.

Obama's Putin stick has been limp.

It was the same with Reagan. The Hawks were very upset with Reagan in the final years of his Presidency, because they felt he became soft on the Soviet Union. But history shows he did it precisely the right way.
