US troops enter Poland, 1st deployment at Russia's doorstep

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — American soldiers rolled into Poland on Thursday, fulfilling a dream some Poles have had since the fall of communism in 1989 to have U.S. troops on their soil as a deterrent against Russia.

(Snip)

U.S. and other Western nations have carried out exercises on NATO's eastern flank in past years, but the new deployment — which includes some 3,500 U.S. troops — marks the first-ever continuous deployment to the region by a NATO ally.

There are fears, however, that the enhanced security could eventually be undermined by the pro-Kremlin views of President-elect Donald Trump.

Poland and the Baltic states also feel threatened by Russia's recent deployment of nuclear-capable Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad, the Russian territory wedged between Poland and Lithuania.

"These actions threaten our interests, our security," President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday. "Especially as it concerns a third party building up its military presence near our borders. It's not even a European state."

(Snip)

Poles still feel betrayed by Obama's "reset" with Russia early on in his administration, which involved abandoning plans for a major U.S. missile defense system in Poland and replacing it with plans for a less ambitious system, still not in place.

The armored brigade combat team arriving in Poland hails from Fort Carson, Colorado. The troops arrived last week in Germany and are gathering in Poland before units will fan out across seven countries from Estonia to Bulgaria. A headquarters unit will be stationed in Germany. After nine months they will be replaced by another unit.

In a separate but related mission, NATO will also deploy four battalions to its eastern flank later this year, one each to Poland and the three Baltic states. The U.S. will also lead one of those battalions.

This is so embarrassing to me as an American. This is nothing more than a dangerous provocation on the eve of the transition of power. Obama has no shame.

Obozo just wants a war with Russia. Even a limited war with Poland as the proxy and NATO as the force. But, he is trying to start a war.

In theory he can launch nukes up to his last minute in office.

Enhanced security? No. The polish army and 3500 American Troops wouldn’t stop a full scale invasion.

They are in NATO, no? So what’s the problem?

Get those troops the #### out NOW!!! well, on the 20th.

Can we AVOID A WAR for the next EIGHT ####ING DAYS!!??

Or has it already been pre ordained by the one world order?

You are right. China would be the only country they couldn’t control, unless they economically forced them into submission.

Russia, China and Trump stand in the way of their dream.

I’m not a Russia fan (don’t hate them, don’t trust them), certainly not a China fan, but HATE the One World Order guys more.

Those lucky bastards. I was stationed near Istanbul back in the late 1980’s. A Polish cruise ship docked and the grand bazaar was flooded with buxom Polish blonde girls. After being around nothing but prude Turkish girls for almost a year... I talked and drank tea with a few, nothing came of it. I’ve always wanted to visit Poland since then.

Yet Putin invading his neighbors and murdering thousands isn’t a threat? Quite a pretzel you have wrapped yourself into there.

Better to have troops in Poland than Germany. At least Poland still values Western Civilization.

George bush avoided provoking or taking unnecessary risks with Russia. He suffered great political damage at the hands of the D’s and their mass media lackeys by not confronting Russia , or destroying, the wmd’s in Iraq when Russia trucked them away. He maintained the peace with Russia and definitely didn’t provoke them. Obama has enabled his islamonazi comrades in Iran to build up a nuclear bombing strike force and icbm’: for their eventual delivery against USA, their continuously- declared numero uno target for destruction. Obama has also illegally waged war or tried to destabilize or overthrow governments to further his islamonazi agenda - he has tons of blood on his hands in Libya Syria Iraq Somalia Africa etc. we agree that there are some D’s plus McCain and Lindsay who are trying to create WW3 provoking and poking at Russia in every possible way. For no good end. These people are very very dangerous imho. I wouldn’t call them “neocons”— that word has little meaning in this context. If that word is meant to denote “warmongers” then let’s please just call them that. Most of the war- mongers against Russia are not conservatives and don’t even think they are conservatives or try to be conservatives on anything - they’re most left wing Democraps.

"What can 3,500 troops do? I am sure they are tough, well trained, and well equipped, but I doubt they can even slow down a full scale invasion."

Knowing the Anointed One, I wouldn't count on the well equipped part. They may have been sent out there with no ammunition for their weapons and the points sawed off their bayonets. Along with cases of candy and bright orange tents.

Strange. The military-shy Obama, in the waning days of his presidency - the last ten days! - deploys American troops into Poland for the first times in decades. And this comes right on top of the kerfuffle about Trump being a Putin surrogate.

Did anyone see that Russian expert on Tucker Carlson last night? He said he's never seen the American intelligence community behave so strangely, to obviously try to undermine and cripple an incoming president, all over this Russia thing. And - as a contributor to The Nation - he's probably coming from the left.

This is a pure negotiating tactic. Russia wants more leverage in dealing with the Ukraine. So as a trade-off, Russia will acquiesce to NATO’s free-reign in Poland in exchange for Russia annexing part of Ukraine. That’s not such a bad deal IMHO.

Russians running Mexico would be entertaining.

I’d definitely want a wall and heavy fortifications though.

Better to bring them home.

Poland and Ukraine should should not agitate for a world war against Russia. Neither should you.

Russia has been on the right track these last 25 years, while we have been going backwards.
