A Michigan man is outraged after he was ticketed for heating up his car in his own driveway and then told by the police chief to drop dead after he complained to local media.
Taylor Trupiano, who posts on Facebook under the name Nick Taylor, posted a photo of the $128 ticket last week, which he found on his windshield after leaving his car running and unattended in his driveway in Roseville.
Lets all take a moment to thank officer dipst K. Keary for wasting the taxpayers money and giving me a ticket for warming up my car in my own damn driveway, Mr. Trupiano wrote, received more than 13,000 shares.

My interpretation of the police officer’s approach to this situation:
“Sir, you’ve opened yourself up to a situation where some real a-hole could come along and take something of value from you. And we wouldn’t want that, would we?? So, here’s what I’m going to do — I’m going to take $128 from you. Have a nice day.”
Sorry, but the US Constitution reads -as such- [tr]
...be secure in their persons, houses, papers and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures...
I doubt the local judge wants to escalate this issue.
Actually in most places it’s state law. Check the statutes where you live and I bet you’ll see it is there as well
Exactly. A couple of years ago, during an especially cold winter, 4 *cars-a-warming* were stolen on our street.
Unless it is friend or buddy’s car, cops spend zero time investigating/finding your car.
Maybe the cops should be more concerned about stopping the potential car thieves than a citizen presenting an ostensibly attractive target.
Why should the law punish the victim instead of preventing the offense?
Thread response, extraordinaire!
You win.
We had a really funny story in the news a couple of years ago, when it was really cold. There had been a bunch of cars stolen out of people’s driveways that were letting their cars warm up. A cop was sitting in his car early one morning, before the sun came up, letting it warm up and the windows were all iced up. A car drove slowly past....the cop was watching...the car came back and someone got out...came over to the cop’s car and opened the door...to a cop with a gun pointed at his face.
“Actually in most places its state law.”
A Big thankyou-!
25 years ago (or so ) there WERE no remote car starters-
up here in the Twin cities - it was very common to see
people warming up their cars- AND many being stolen!
Passed a law to stop this- at the time- second set of keys to lock the car- (still not a good idea)
SO....glad remote starters have come along- for $350
you can warm your car Legally- this guy should know
this -(is the police officer a A-hole... yep
easier to knock on the door and tell him the law than to write a ticket
If there is such a questionable law on the books in Michigan, then the cop was doing his job. If you don’t like a particular law then go after the lawmakers and get it changed. But don’t go around advocating that cops pick and choose which laws to enforce or not. Cops don’t make the laws, they just enforce them.
I disagree. What’s next? A ticket for an open window on a hot summer night? No burglar bars on the basement windows? Ooh! I know... no firearm within reach. Surely that should be against the law.
Reading stories like this reinforces my happiness we live in the boondocks in a red state. We could leave a vehicle run for days and no one would care.
If the car was unlocked and the key was in the ignition the guy was inviting a theft. Doesnt matter that the car was in his own driveway.
Most people have two sets of keys. One starts the car and remains in the ignition and the other to LOCK THE CAR WHILE IT IS HEATING.
Now who are you with?
Your own ignorance is showing...Here's what you need to know about Roseville Garth.
First, it's the community of choice for the folks migrating out of the city of Detroit.
Second, it's the primary target rich environment of the inner city thugs who no longer have anything left to steal, rob or rape in Detroit. And vehicles, locked or not, are number one on their shopping lists......
#3 what utter BS and Snowflake mentality. “Inviting a theft”?
In case your didn’t know, it is ILLEGAL to enter and drive away with a vehicle without the owners consent that is NOT yours. It’s akin to whining when someone unlawfully enters a house. Because you didn’t lock a door it is somehow the owners fault someone commits a crime by Illegally entering? How about we hold those that commit those crimes responsible instead?
I wish you snowflakes would grow the F up.
Just because I decide not to lock something up does NOT give you or anyone else the right to use, borrow, steal it. IT is against the law.
When I was a kid we NEVER locked a Car, House or out builidng. You know what changed? Idiots that blame the victim and Lawyers who use the unlocked door as a justification of a Criminal doing ILLEGAL stuff.
(Biff didn’t know no different, the car was running so he decided instead of walking to work he would take the Neighbors car.....he wasn’t using it at the time)
Arg!
A lot of comments in this thread point out that it’s his own car so if it is stolen it’s his right, that other things in the yard can be stolen, that they don’t check for your door being locked. All true.
Except — the people who live in this community pay taxes for police to, among other things, catch car theives. And they apparently noticed that when it gets really cold, a lot of people had their cars stolen because they were sitting running with keys in the ignition. And the people got tired of watching their tax dollars go to this, when it was easily preventable.
So the people had their representatives pass an ordinance making this action illegal. Now, I’d rather them include a clause where you can sign a waiver that says “in exchange for doing this, if my car is stolen I won’t ask for police help”. OF course, if you signed that, your insurance company would probably not cover you for theft. And if you really thought you’d be out a $30,000 car without any way of recovering it, I bet you would stop leaving it running in the driveway.
But if enough people in the community think this is a bad thing, they should just get the council to rescind the ordinance. It isn’t the fault of the police chief that this law exists. They didn’t make up the law on their own.
Lastly — the guy complained that the cops were “wasting their money”. Actually no. The cop because of the law had to take time to check the car and write a ticket, sure. But the guy will now pay a fine, which will likely more than cover the cost of the cop writing the ticket. NOT paying a fine, having a “warning” instead — that is what would WASTE money, because the cop would take time to do that warning while he was being paid his salary.
People should get second keys if they want to warm up their car, that way they could lock the car while warming. (My car doesn’t even have a key, so not sure how the law would apply). Or they should change the law. But it is silly to call a police officer names for enforcing a law that is his JOB to enforce.
It would be like laughing at the sanitation worker for “handling garbage”.
The ordinance is bullshit and the chief is a dick. They should stick to fighting actual crimes instead of soaking taxpayers for more $$$.
Hey wait, buddy...the gate to your back yard is wide open. Anyone can just walk in...
Stop, Reggie - back up! I see a car on the street with the windows down...
