The New York Police Department is now allowing officers to wear beards and grow turbans in a bid to accommodate Sikh recruits.
Sikh officers will be allowed to wear turbans in place of the traditional police cap and grow beards up to a half-inch long, which are required for religious reasons.
Police Commissioner James O'Neill announced the new rules that affect all religious members on Wednesday following a graduation ceremony for new police recruits.

Agreed. But, many automatically associate Sikhs as being Muslims. It’s one reason why I am not for their wearing their turbans on duty.

If there is good news associated with this it’s that they assimilate. We have a new sub next to us with many Indians and they had more Christmas decorations on their homes than anybody else.
Yes, Sikhs are valued members of both the police and
the military in India.
I knew several senior black (and at least one white) NCOs and officers over my career with this condition. They generally kept it trimmed to around 1/8", dependent upon their profile.
That condition (for those who don't know, its where short curly hair stubble curls around and grows into the skin) is extremely painful, I never begrudged anyone with a legitimate profile for this condition.
Sorry but making reasonable (that do not in any way shape or form interfere with mission accomplishment) religious accommodations are appropriate.
I had an orthodox Jewish soldier who wore a yarmulke under his soft cap and beret. He also was excused from pulling duty on Saturdays, unless we were in the field. I had a dispute with our commander over requesting kosher food for him. Once we sorted that out, making arrangements to get him kosher food in the field through the chaplain was easy.
He made up for it by taking Sunday duty, sometimes even when not scheduled, to allow other NCOs to go to church.
Then I transferred to an office where there were much younger men with beards, or others would shave every 2-4 days.
I joined in, now I shave 2-3 times a week, and joined Harry's razor club to save money.
Why wait 9-10 more years? Sell out and come out into the hinterland. We need cops too, in our small towns.
Sihks are fine people. They have been allies in the fight against Islam.
But the Sikhs really are good guys.
So much for holding everyone to the same standards. If they can’t put their religion aside while on duty, and be uniformed like everyone else, I have to question their dedication.

Oh no. I will not be going to Florida! I’ll move south but I’m not sure where yet. And I would prefer to get out of LEO work. I’m working on developing a skill, such as woodworking. Between that and my pension I should be fine.
I’m on the downhill of my career. I can’t give up my pension (50% of your last 12 months salary after 20 years of service). And once I’m done here, no more LEO work for me. Gonna start a new career.
You know, if you do this for the Sihks you will have to do it for the Muslims.
