The New York Police Department is now allowing officers to wear beards and grow turbans in a bid to accommodate Sikh recruits.
Sikh officers will be allowed to wear turbans in place of the traditional police cap and grow beards up to a half-inch long, which are required for religious reasons.
Police Commissioner James O'Neill announced the new rules that affect all religious members on Wednesday following a graduation ceremony for new police recruits.

Great, everyone will know what cops to run or stay away from.
I have great respect for Sikhs, but I think it’s a bad idea to make exceptions to accepted uniform appearance for religious reasons.
Just what I was going to say. Sikhs are the furthest thing from Islam, they have absolutely nothing in common with Muslims except the beards and turbans which Sikhs don’t even call turbans, they call them a dastar. I would rather have a Sikh as a cop or a judge any day over a leftist. Six battalions of Sikhs fought in WW2 for the Allies and Churchill praised them.

As long as it doesn’t help camouflage the Muslims...I have no problem with accommodating the Sikhs...Sikhs are “the good guys” (not to mention fine warriors). But if they do it for Muslims too, then that could become a major issue. There is DeBlasio behind this...open the door by accommodating good people, then you have to accommodate the terror cult too.
I feel exactly as you do. I like Sikhs. I respect Sikhs. But I don’t agree with these kinds of accommodations.
I view these accommodations as the camel nose in the tent, no pun intended with the attribution.

Slippery slope. It’ll soon be anything goes rather than uniform. Lets see burka clad female officers chasing down suspects.
Agreed. If beards are allowed for Sikhs and Muzzies then they should be allowed for everyone.

I’ve been NYPD for well over a decade. This is not an issue for us. We have a lot of other things to be worried about. Personally, I cannot wait until I can retire and move out of New York State. I do not plan on doing one day past 20 years.
Sikhs are OK except when they are bombing Canadian or Indian planes, Other than that, they are just like us.

Floor in the door on religious garb folks, that’s all this is.
Next comes the Islamic exceptions, using this as an example of something that worked swell.
Islam and the Sikhs are two different things, but the leaders will see them as exactly the same.

Thanks for writing this, it’s very very true. They are not Muslims.
Their history demonstrates they are fierce warriors, Sikh units were some of the most highly decorated units in India.
