U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said on Thursday that because of the high cost of Lockheed Martin Corp's F-35 fighter, he had asked Boeing Co to offer a price for a "comparable F-18 Super Hornet."
"Based on the tremendous cost and cost overruns of the Lockheed Martin F-35, I have asked Boeing to price-out a comparable F-18 Super Hornet!," Trump wrote on Twitter....

Boeing should counter that the planes can only be built in NC
“So he intends to Sole Source to Boeing, vs an open contract competition?”
So? The Super Hornet is a Boeing product. If the gov wanted to buy iPhones, do they need to open contract away from Apple??
I havent heard any of this “first 100 days acomplishment” stuff since the election. It seems Trump is already at work.
From many of the earlier posts here, it looks like the F-35 is an almost ideal ideal Obola boondoggle—a massively expensive “defense” project loaded with opportunities for graft that doesn’t deliver a usable end product while simultaneously cutting off funding for other projects that could work, and work economically. Looks like PRESIDENT Trump is attacking on another front. GO TRUMP !!
Seeing posts around here you’d think half the people we’d still be doing communication via carrier pigeon
Right. The customer has to show some discipline.
Bingo ! Give that man all the teddy bears!
Why not restart the Raptor? It sounds like it was a much better aircraft.
F-18 is a Navy plane. Don't know how that's gonna go down with the AF.
Furthermore, the Marines are expecting a VTOL variant of the F-35. They have assault carriers designed for jump-jets and have already retired the last of their Harriers. What are they gonna do?
F-35 was designed for all three services - that was supposed to save money in maintenance. Hornet would work for two (Navy and AF, and the AF probably wouldn't like it). Do the Marines get new planes while Navy and AF get 1980's design? If you cut the order to 1/3 what is was and only jump-jets, what happens to price per? Or do you cancel ALL of them and drag the Harriers out of mothballs?
The F-18 is a Boeing product, while the F-35 is Lockheed Martin. Trump is playing the two companies against each other, of course. Is it a three-corner bluff (Trump dangling the F-18 sale under Boeing's nose to get a break on AF-1 and at the same time beating Lockheed down on the F-35)?
Perhaps we should invite Mikoyan to bid as well.
Facing competition—Lockheed may well lower the costs for their gold plated crop duster. Use the Market forces to control costs—this is the key to Obamacare too.

“Just Shopping” is the greatest invention of mankind.
It is FREEDOM to buy from whoever produces the best product for you at the lowest price.
Anything that impedes “Just Shopping” is a huge detriment to your FREEDOM and the long term success of mankind.

In 2012 I was mad because I said I wanted Jack Ryan and the best the GOP could come up with was Governor Goodhair. I think this year I may have got Ryan after all!
Let’s just build some cheap stealth drones to take out the radar and air defense, THEN we can send in the expensive stuff with our precious human pilots.
God, that’s an ugly plane. So, completely competitive with the F-35.
Think about drone aircraft and we’ll really save money.
My first thought was a big guppy..........
Dogfighting isn’t it’s mission.
I think it’s not so much the airframe as its’ reliance on computer software for air superiority.
