This painting was looted by the Nazis, then seized from my living room
Los Angeles Times ^ | December 4, 2016 | Craig Gilmore

Two agents from U.S. Homeland Security’s ICE unit arrived at my door in September looking for a Polish lady — not a person, but a painting: Melchior Geldorp’s “Portrait of a Lady.” She had, they informed me, been looted by the Nazis from the National Museum in Warsaw.

Unsure if these gentlemen were indeed who they claimed to be, I didn’t invite them in. But I knew exactly what they were seeking: My partner, David, and I had purchased this very portrait — ostensibly the work of a different artist — a decade earlier from a major auction house in New York.

Upon their leaving, I stood dumbfounded, holding a packet of information about the alleged provenance of our painting. After calling David at work to drop this bombshell, I began a Googling frenzy, eventually bringing me to Poland’s Division for Looted Art website. Seconds later I was gawking at an old black-and-white photo of our beloved lady, a beautiful portrait painted on oak panel in 1628. Tears welled in my eyes with the realization that, without question, if this were true we needed to do our duty and get her safely home.

The part that has me scratching my head is that this fell under the auspices of DHS.

Everything in the US is under the auspices of either the DHS or the EPA.

And what about art looted by the Soviets?

Props for doing the right thing, and for not blindly trusting anyone who says they're a government agent.

Perhaps Poland can send them a high quality print of the portrait as a thank-you for caring for it these past few years?

It was a mistake for the auction house to sell this. Even 10 years ago, there were countless lists of stolen art from WW2.

Strangely, the author writes not a word about how he came to own the painting in the first place -- yet that should be a legitimate part of the painting's story.

This avoidance suggests to me that, when he acquired the painting, he knew there was something fishy about its provenance.

She looks like a ugly woman dressed up as a poodle. Deal with it.

Bogus Pachysandra has said, regarding modern art, “Modern Art can be a booger with a hair in it!”

I did a painting of one of my dogs a few years ago and it’s just as good as this poodle lady. Seriously.

What exactly would you wish the artist to have painted in 1628?

How about a velvet painting of dogs playing Primero? (Primero, seeing as poker hadn't been invented yet.)

Gee...what a surprise. The aggrieved individual has a male “partner”.Well, pal,in case it escaped your notice more than a few of your fellow pervs died in the ovens during WWII.One would think that you might be even less sympathetic toward Nazi crimes than the typical Westerner.

“Maybe you all need to go work on your stick figures”

The Harvey Pekar (RIP) estate is said to be worth 12 million. Not bad for a full time VA file clerk who conceptualize underground comics with stick figures on his days off.

I’d wager they knew exactly what it was when they purchased it, as did the “auction house” that sold it to them.

It’s called “laundering” and it’s the M.O. of hard-left elitists like this fag author and his sodomy pal.

These kind of people aren’t known for truth telling. This article is almost certainly a concocted alibi.

DHS cannot find untold thousands of illegals streaming across the southern border, but they can find a 400 year old painting.

Awesome.

Homosexuals were the backbone and shock troops that enabled the rise of the Nazi Party.

Chances are good that if the author and his fellow traveler had been in Germany in the 1930s they would have been among the most enthusiastic followers of Hitler’s movement.

He surrendered the painting - it was not ‘seized from his living room’. Drama queen!!!!!!

Gee, so proud of Craig and his partner David.

"During the hectic month that followed, I clutched to the words “global citizenry” as my mantra. The notion of behaving as a global citizen can sometimes seem abstract, but it was glaringly obvious that this situation was bigger than our immediate surroundings. More than that, we realized our beloved lady was, herself, a global citizen, called upon to serve a greater purpose than the beauty she lent to our Silver Lake home."

Homosexuals were the backbone and shock troops that enabled the rise of the Nazi Party.

That's a little-known fact. Many storm trooper leaders were homosexual. And it would have stayed that way had the German generals not objected. Pity that the generals did not object to the Nazi leadership as a whole.
