MANILA, Dec 3 US President-elect Donald Trump told Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte that Manila was conducting its deadly drug war the right way, Duterte said today, in stark contrast to the criticism he received from President Barack Obama.
The Philippine president called Trump late yesterday evening to congratulate him on his election victory with Trump wishing him success in his controversial anti-crime crackdown, in which some 4,800 people have been killed since June, according to Duterte.
He was quite sensitive also to our worry about drugs. And he wishes me well... in my campaign and he said that... we are doing it as a sovereign nation, the right way, Duterte said in a statement today.
Duterte, 71, launched an unprecedented war on drugs that drew a wave of global criticism with Obama urging the leader in September to conduct his campaign the right way following concerns over alleged extrajudicial killings.
Trump's office released a brief statement following the conversation, saying Duterte had congratulated Trump and the two agreed to work together closely.
Duterte won presidential elections in May after pledging to kill tens of thousands of drug suspects, warning that otherwise the Philippines would turn into a narco-state.
Since assuming office, he has called on police and even civilians to kill drug users.
Duterte also said he would be happy to slaughter three million drug addicts, and likened his campaign to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler's efforts to exterminate Jews in Europe.
In October Duterte announced a "separation" from the United States and had called for the withdrawal of American troops from his country, putting into question Manila's 70-year-old alliance with Washington.
But today, Duterte said he could sense a good rapport with an animated Trump.
Video released by Duterte's office showed the Philippine leader laughing as he chatted on the phone, later saying Trump would would be a good president for the United States of America.
Duterte said the president-elect invited him to visit New York and Washington DC and he returned the favour by asking Trump to attend a regional summit that the Philippines is set to host next year.
If Im around, he wants to be notified of my presence, Duterte said.
“e excitement of some hereon at the prospect of slaughtering drug users is disturbing.”
I favor a jury trial and a vigorous defense.
But don’t be too disturbed. It’s an (over)reaction to the recent decades of “drugs are harmless” and “addiction is just an illness.”
We’re sick of it. They aren’t harmless. And cancer is an illness; addiction is NOT.
Treating American criminals as collaborators of these criminal foreign gangs would only be justifiable if their harsh treatment as American members of these gangs was announced beforehand so they would have a chance to change their minds.
Furthermore, druggies have a way of spreading their habit to other impressionable people. Examine any life ruined by drugs and you'll find it all started with some druggie "friend" who sucked the fellow in. Druggies are not content with ruining merely their own lives. They have to spread their problem to others.
I'm good with that.
They bring with them all sorts of evil and enslavement.
We’ve all seen it. Why do we pretend otherwise?
Again, not supportive of pre-emptive slaughter. I want due process. But afterwards I want justice.
I don't know. Libertarian drug advocates keep saying it's merely the druggie's private, personal choice to be a druggie and no one else's business (except his dealer's business of course.) Many people believe this.
Killing the bastards really does make it unprofitable.
Violent crimes of all sorts are down in the Philippines.
Try it on the rich kid dealing in his Ivy League dorm, see how that goes over.
“Why?”
There aren’t many people I get excited about the slaughter of, including drug users. To each his own.
Set me loose on a chaos-binge of drug-pusher killing and I could rid this entire county of drug-related crime in 5 days. Flat. That would last for about 90 days and then new guys would move in. About 3 cycles of that and that would end, too. General crime would drop 80% and you could let go half of the police force and about 60% of the probation and parole officers.
Of course, I do not advocate for killing Americans without due process and appeal, so it’s moot.
We know who pushes and sells (and uses). The problem is that the courts are slow and their hands are tied, politicians place the cost of incarceration over the safety of the community, and the sentences are not carried out (i.e., trafficker gets 10 years in State, but is paroled after two or three and is back out selling).
For 85 out of 100 users, crime and drugs go hand in hand.
There are tons of guns in the Philippines. There were, or are, lots of public officials on the take from the major drug kingpins. That is part of the corruption they are fighting. Even the head of the NBI (FBI) was fired for being on the take.
My pastor tells me they do it differently in the Philippines. I would say no other country does it this way. They go to the dug kingpins, and ask them to please stop what they are doing. That's called knock knock, talk. If the dealers continue in their perfidious ways, it's all about knock knock bang.
I think one would have to live among the Philippine people, to get a feeling for the anger and disgust they have toward the druggies.
He made a show of holding up a magazine picture.
It was around that time that he also awarded about 10 police with cash rewards for excellence in police work ... the most perps captured, etc.
THEN he started jaunting around the world
I get daily updates on Duterte's movements with many video clips ... the ones I allude to are probably impossible for me to find, but if there is interest, I'll try
What do they do if they find a strung out junkie on the street like we used to have tons of before Giuliani?
Arrest? Kill? Give a warning? Just wondering.
Hope all is well even though I know it is!! :)
I haven't seen any, so I just don't know for sure. There surely aren't any easy answers to this, but the COPs (common ordinary people) have been demanding solutions for a long time.
Because it is illegal, unconstitutional, and immoral.
Druggies do bad sh*t to people. Perhaps they need to face some consequences.
If you want people suspected of a crime murdered, you’re living in the wrong country, and not very bright, to boot.
If a person has a beer, perhaps they should be hanged in the town square.
Toss him in the Hudson.
People may whine about how insensitive to druggies this may sound, but they'll change their tune once they experience the joys of druggies doing bad shit to them or their loved ones... and when they discover that the law isn't going to help them.
Nah, you're living in the wrong country if you think we should put up with drug crime indefinitely. We're certainly better off without that sentiment.
