MANILA, Dec 3 US President-elect Donald Trump told Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte that Manila was conducting its deadly drug war the right way, Duterte said today, in stark contrast to the criticism he received from President Barack Obama.
The Philippine president called Trump late yesterday evening to congratulate him on his election victory with Trump wishing him success in his controversial anti-crime crackdown, in which some 4,800 people have been killed since June, according to Duterte.
He was quite sensitive also to our worry about drugs. And he wishes me well... in my campaign and he said that... we are doing it as a sovereign nation, the right way, Duterte said in a statement today.
Duterte, 71, launched an unprecedented war on drugs that drew a wave of global criticism with Obama urging the leader in September to conduct his campaign the right way following concerns over alleged extrajudicial killings.
Trump's office released a brief statement following the conversation, saying Duterte had congratulated Trump and the two agreed to work together closely.
Duterte won presidential elections in May after pledging to kill tens of thousands of drug suspects, warning that otherwise the Philippines would turn into a narco-state.
Since assuming office, he has called on police and even civilians to kill drug users.
Duterte also said he would be happy to slaughter three million drug addicts, and likened his campaign to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler's efforts to exterminate Jews in Europe.
In October Duterte announced a "separation" from the United States and had called for the withdrawal of American troops from his country, putting into question Manila's 70-year-old alliance with Washington.
But today, Duterte said he could sense a good rapport with an animated Trump.
Video released by Duterte's office showed the Philippine leader laughing as he chatted on the phone, later saying Trump would would be a good president for the United States of America.
Duterte said the president-elect invited him to visit New York and Washington DC and he returned the favour by asking Trump to attend a regional summit that the Philippines is set to host next year.
If Im around, he wants to be notified of my presence, Duterte said.
Photoshop, huh. Well, that makes more sense.
If its a war on drugs, its a war. You declare war, and then carry it out. Which, I think, he did and is.
What doth it profit a dealer if he gain a playboy mansion but hath his brains splattered out of the back of his head?
I believe he was merely trolling the media when he said he’d like to do to the druggies what Hitler did to the jews.
Drugs destroy countries. The Opium Wars are not forgotten history in Asia.
Photoshopped
Every day Trump is making me smile. Feels good to smile again.
I would like to see American law enforcement adopt way tougher tactics on foreign-born gang and cartel members. MS-13, Florencia 13, Barrio Azteca, the Juarez cartel, the Los Zetas cartel, Trinitarios, Pistoleros Latinos, and finally the Mexican Mafia.
Foreign-born members of these gangs should be treated as enemies of the state and as unlawful combatants out of uniform. When caught and after their foreign citizenship status has been confirmed they should be put agains a wall, shot, and rolled into a hole. Americans in those gangs should funnel into the regular legal system.
Sorry for being so naive - but is Harrison Ford a Trump supporter or is that just photo-shopped? Again, sorry for being a nerd.
Ah - that answered my question....sorry didn’t read this before I asked.
I believe people have a LOT of guns in the Philippines. One of our biggest rivals for gun ownership.
It will be a hoot when the potheads and their pushers descend like locusts on this thread. They will denounce Duterte for violating the law. Meanwhile, these same smug morally superior potheads will say nothing about their own decades-long compulsive lawlessness to obey their master: a feeling, a mere feeling.
Explosive post!
Lol!
Isn’t harrison ford a pothead? If so, he’ll never take the millenial falcon to the PI.
Lol, good ones! Thanks!
The misleading media is at it again. Trump said essentially the Philippines should handle their own drug problem "as a sovereign nation," i.e. without interference from us or other outsiders. But, of course, the press wants people to believe that what Trump really meant was that he wants to slaughter millions of drug users. I can see a real difference there...
“The misleading media is at it again. (snip)...the press wants people to believe that what Trump really meant was that he wants to slaughter millions of drug users.”
My thoughts exactly. And the excitement of some hereon at the prospect of slaughtering drug users is disturbing.
Why not consider them (Americans who join) collaborators and treat as such?
Good news. Hopefully there will soon be a lot of stone cold dead former drug dealers in America. Surely guns have a more noble use than merely for for shooting at targets, trees and squirrels.
I’ve been advocating executing drug dealers, from street level to kingpin to financier, for years now. And no plea bargains. Guilty? You’re dead.
But if you can’t live with the death penalty see my FReeper profile for an acceptable alternative.
Why?
