President-elect Donald Trump has chosen retired Marine Gen. James N. Mattis to be secretary of defense, nominating a former senior military officer who led operations across the Middle East to run the Pentagon less than four years after he hung up his uniform, according to people familiar with the decision.

Great pick.

General Mattis is the one I would have picked to lead us in the second Revolution to take back our Country from the Muslim and illegal invasion that Washington has let happen.

He would have been a great leader and the military would have followed him through the gates of hell

Best pick so far!

Agreed. If this does not put the fear of God into your enemies, nothing will.

Most interesting of all, in my opinion.

The strategy of a man has its origin in a deep part of the thought process. In this case it is about a commitment to the higher nature of man, thus refuting temptations to action, based on the desires of other people.

No good military man can allow himself to be baited or co-erst.

The sad thing is that we had another man very much like GEN Mattis as Deputy National Security Advisor under Bush 43, GEN (Ret.) Wayne Downing, who came to the White House right after 9/11. GEN Downing commanded an infantry company in Vietnam; the 2nd Ranger battalion; 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored division; the 75th Ranger Regiment; USASOC, JSOC and SOCOM. He was one of the finest men I ever knew; hard as woodpecker lips and a gentleman, but not an ounce of political correctness in his entire body.

When Condi Rice tried to chastise him for not attending all of her meetings, he said, “I can’t make all of your *&^! meetings; I have a war to run!” He didn’t last long in DC...

I love the pick of Mattis.

I find Patton to be a far more interesting figure than MacArthur.

I don’t deny that MacArthur had a talented military mind, but I dislike a lot of things about MacArthur that I have read over the years.

In particular, his treatment of Billy Mitchell, which was shameful. Other things, his pompous attitude, and I still think he should have been excoriated for his failure to prepare US forces in the Philippines in the wake of the Pearl Harbor attack, where they were able to just destroy our Air Force on the ground at Clark Field with impunity, even though there had been plenty of time to disperse the planes.

I do give him some credit for his governance of Japan after the war. He was the right person for that job.

I disagree. We must roll the sodomite problem back to 1955 if we are to survive.

And he was a great leader in uniform and out.

Yes he was.

It was the fact that you did put Magnificent Bastard in quotes that signaled to me you were quoting Patton who was speaking of Rommel when he said, “You magnificent bastard, I read your book.”
Thank you for your service! Unfortunately, there are far too many people who have no idea about our military history. I am not among them as military history is my passion.

Well good for you! And you’re right, there are far too many people who have no knowledge of our military history. In fact, there are far too many people who have little to no knowledge of any aspect of our history. Mention the Argonne Forest to most Americans, they’ll think it’s a national park. But then, the same is true of geography, isn’t it?

I’ve purchased several copies of A.J. Langguth’s “Patriots” for friends and family to give them some idea of what the American Revolution was about and in an effort to whet their appetites for history in general.

p.s. You are very welcome; It was my honor and a privilege to serve, as did my brother, my father, my grandfather, etc.!

Francis Ford Coppola did the research and wrote the screenplay for Patton (another screenwriter who came along later gets a credit too). Coppola does the DVD commentary for the film.

I should have figured there was already a libation by that name. Silly me. Around here lately we’ve been sipping on Cinerator, a 91 proof hot cinnamon whiskey out of Bardstown, KY. Makes your eyeballs sweat!
