President-elect Donald Trump has chosen retired Marine Gen. James N. Mattis to be secretary of defense, nominating a former senior military officer who led operations across the Middle East to run the Pentagon less than four years after he hung up his uniform, according to people familiar with the decision.

FYI, I’m a lawyer - but I realize (unlike many in my profession) that the law is a tool that is supposed to be used to benefit society, not an end unto itself.

Damn shame there aren’t more lawyers with your common sense.

No, the law was changed in 1962 to 7 years from the existing 10 years. The law itself is from the 1940s.

But I know never bother you with facts that challenge you knee jerk whiny negativity and ignorance. You would rather cling to your idiocy.

Excellent

Just before Marine Gen. James ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis was getting ready to deploy with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force to Iraq in early 2004, one of his colleagues asked him about the importance of reading for military officers who sometimes find themselves “too busy to read.”

Fantastic !

My old Marine friend will be estatic. He loves Mad Dog.

What we need is a distillery to market a good 110 proof whiskey, name it MAD DOG, and print on the label that it’s distilled in honor of Sec. of War, Marine Gen. James “Mad Dog” Mattis. And when purchased by Democrats, tack on a 15% surcharge.

“This’ll twist yer noodle. Trump was born the day after Patton died.”

Uh, nice thought, but not quite. Patton died on 12/21/45, and Trump was born on 6/14/46. So unless he was 3 months early, different souls.

Much else is similar, and THAT bothers the shit out of them. Trump (and Mattis) are like Patton - losing just isn’t on the table.

Why is this a good choice?
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Because he is a strong believer in the duty of all military personnel engaged in combat to KILL THE ENEMY?

They did it for Marshall in 1950. Does anyone know a time when such a request was denied? I don’t.

Nope. AFAIK, Marshall was the only retired active duty officer who was ever--since the law's creation in 1947--nominated for the Sec Def position.

Haven’t cared for years and sure as hell am not going to try and figure him out now. Someone supposedly so smart surely can find a way of dismantling a lib short of calling him a dork and hanging up.

I thank God every day that I was able to retire just after Klinton was sworn in way way way back in 1992. I only had to serve under the scum for 40 days and I was retired. Thank you again Lord Jesus.

I was thinking more on the lines of him being just a nasty little “fudge stain” on Lady Liberty’s under-draws. Not even a real POTUS.

You Sir, have a very thought-provoking imagination! “A nasty little fudge stain on Lady Liberty’s underdrawers.” I’m going to use that whenever that turd’s name comes up in future conversation!

“Patton died on 12/21/45, and Trump was born on 6/14/46.”

Yes, thanks for the correction.

I’d heard about this many months ago, and my memory of the precise timeline was off by six months.

Still makes ya go, hmmm...

It sure does. Many similarities, including physically.

Interestingly, I have a fairly large number of whales teeth, and a bit of whalebone. The teeth are essentially identical to ivory. This was all acquired by my parents in the early ‘70s before the embargo on whale products. At this point, it is virtually impossible to sell this stuff across state lines, even though the animals died long ago and the product was brought legally into the country. But you know, I’m pretty sure that I can find someone somewhere in Texas who does artwork with handgun grips to carve some of those teeth up and put it on some of my handguns.

Patton was a better movie. I don’t think that either life or either personality is necessarily that much more fascinating than the other, but more work was clearly put into researching Patton’s life and making it into a better movie.
