President-elect Donald Trump plans to nominate former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao to head the Transportation Department, a source with knowledge of the decision said on Tuesday. The source, who requested anonymity, confirmed the pick to Reuters. Chao, the wife of Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, served as labor secretary under President George W. Bush and was the first Asian-American woman to hold a Cabinet position. The formal announcement was expected Tuesday afternoon. Although Trump spoke on the campaign trail about wanting to "drain the swamp" in Washington, more than half of Trump's nine key appointments so far have been accomplished Washington insiders, such as Chao.

Gift to McConnell. Might make legislative goals in Senate move more quickly.

Not my fave pick, but really? Just stop. This may well be a sop to Mitch to ensure no filibusters succeed.

Reagan had to pick a number of people who were not optimal, but whose selections got him other objectives. Try thinking strategic.

During Chao's first four years as Secretary of Labor, OSHA did not promulgate a single significant health standard.[24]

I work in Logistics, DOT has been out of control under O. Sound like Chao is just want we need at DOT.

That made me bust out laughing at my desk. This would have been the perfect job for Christie.

She’s far from the worst person who could have been selected for this post. The role of the U.S. Secretary of Transportation is pretty inconsequential in Washington compared to others. The last two presidents even nominated someone from the other party to fill the post (Norm Mineta in the Bush administration and Ray LaHood in the Obama administration).

This a brilliant appointment that joins the Senate Majority Leader to Trump’s hip right from the gitgo, and nearly guarantees Mitch delivers the entire GOP Senate to Trump on nearly every issue for four years.

Not to mention, the woman has excellent experience and credentials, and clearly has amazing political instincts and capabilities since she’s pretty much the power that’s pushed the Mitch throne into the forefront since she married him in 1993.

Right -- under Ronald Reagan.

If you go back through history you'll find that there hasn't been anyone of real substance in this position in years. The Department of Transportation didn't even exist until 1966, so there have only been 17 people in this post over the last 50 years under 9 presidents.

I’d love to see a law that states: No family member of a member of congress may be employed in the federal government, nor may they work or act as a lobbyist so long as their family member remains in elected position. If a family member is elected to federal office, they must leave their federal employment or lobbying position within 30 days of the election.
