Trump picks Elaine Chao for transportation secretary
CNN ^ | 11/29/2016 | Phil Mattingly

(CNN)President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Elaine Chao, the former labor secretary and wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, to be his choice for transportation secretary, an official briefed on the matter told CNN on Tuesday.

The announcement is expected to come this afternoon. Chao served as secretary of labor under President George W. Bush from 2001 through 2009 -- the longest tenure in the position since World War II -- and has been married to McConnell since 1993. She was the first Asian-American woman to serve in a Cabinet position.

Chao also served as the deputy secretary of transportation under President George H.W. Bush from 1989 to 1991. Following her time in government, Chao has held a position as a distinguished fellow at the Heritage Foundation in addition to conducting media appearances.

At the Transportation Department, Chao would have a key role in helping Trump get an infrastructure spending bill passed through Congress and start government-backed works projects -- a role likely to be complicated by her relationship with McConnell, who will also be a critical player in any infrastructure bill negotiations.

I see this as a smart way to get Mitch to support his infrastructure plan, among other initiatives, and temper his comments even when he opposes the Administration.

Heritage is pushing School Choice and back in the day NAFTA. Not so sure about these “conservative” groups anymore.

I think this is probably the only way to deal with Mitch. It’s likely a good move.

I disagree. Transportation in the US is inherently interstate, and the Federal government has had a role since 1811. The East Coast in particular is composed of geographically smaller states, too much of the movement of people, goods, and services crosses state lines to keep the Federal government out of it.

Chou evidently has Trumps confidence. We will see how it plays out, but this pick does not fill me with concern.

So the turtle will know everything that goes on in cabinet meetings?

I see it the other way around - when McConnell isn't playing ball, perhaps a word to the wife will get him off the dime.

Nepotism to ram home an infrastructure Bill. Clever. I doubt she’ll have that much sway since she can’t threaten to hold back relations (To far? hahahah)

If I remember correctly, Chao was very tough on the unions when she was Labor Secretary.

Oh great. She worked for the government before. This definitely means we’re gonna bomb Russia now!!!

Relax, this is the dept of Transportation. You won’t hear about her again for at least another 4 years, just like the previous secretary of Transportation.

What does that mean—how was she “screwing with people’s overtime”?

Labor unions hated her, and she was criticized for a steep drop in OSHA investigations during her tenure.

These factors alone tell me that she's not a bad pick at all.

She tried to lower the base salary of those who would be eligible to receive overtime pay. She was not successful thank goodness.

During Chao's first four years as Secretary of Labor, OSHA did not promulgate a single significant health standard.[24]

I work in Logistics, DOT has been out of control under O. Sound like Chao is just want we need at DOT.
