President Duterte changes his mind, OKs U.S. assault rifle deal for Philippine police

MANILA, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte will move forward with purchasing more than 26,000 assault rifles from the United States, reversing his earlier position.

The M4 carbine rifles from SIG Sauer are destined for the Philippine National Police. Duterte's reversal comes just weeks after the president said he would consider buying similar weapons from Russia if the United States blocked the sale. The controversial head of state gave his approval following a meeting with PNP Director General Ronald dela Rosa, who maintained the deal would not meet any opposition.

"We reported to him that the processing of the documents is going smoothly, according to ... SIG Sauer. They saw no one is blocking it," dela Rosa said in a news conference. "So when I explained that to him, he said 'Okay, you continue'."

Philippine authorities said they began doubting whether the sale would go through after remarks made by U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin, a Democrat from Maryland. The senator expressed opposition to the sale, saying Duterte's violent anti-drug campaign has violated human rights and should disqualify the deal.

Philippine officials estimate roughly 4,000 people have been killed by police in the effort, although human rights organizations such as Amnesty International say this number is likely higher. Duterte has been vocal about encouraging police and citizens to kill suspected drug dealers.

Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought this deal was scotched on the US side, as well.

I thought Sig Sauer was an Austrian or German company? How is this a deal with the US?

RE: Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought this deal was scotched on the US side, as well.

Duterte is playing us. When the Obama administration refused to sell him weapons because of concern over his Drug War and the many extra-judicial killings that were occurring, he cursed Obama and threatened to buy arms from Russia instead ( and the Russians were quite interested ).

So, here we are ... somebody on our side did some diplomatic side deal.

Maybe arming our agencies was partly stockpiling wholesale goods for future enrichment?

While SIG Sauer is a company with German and Swiss roots, since the 1990’s the company has been based in the United States and had most of its manufacturing done here

What happened to due process of law? You shoot your MIL and toss a joint on her and say I killed a drug dealer?

I’m guessing that the Sig M4s are made in a factory here.

There is a long history of Sig Sauer. I'm a big Sig fan and used to follow the transition from Switzerland to Germany to Exeter, New Hampshire.

.

Very few pistols are produced any longer in Germany (DE).

The exceptions are the high end, match grade pistols like this on from their German custom shop.

This, and my Dan Wesson Valor are my two most accurate and fun to shoot pistols.

Thanks for this info - I own a Sig P226, but I don’t know much about the history of the company.

If these Sig Sauer M4 Carbines are good enough for the Philippinos, they are good enough for U. S.-trained rifleman veterans. I want one. How about letting DCM have supplies to release if there is such a surplus that foreign nations can have them?

This has everything to do with the election, and who won.

They realize that nobody in the Trump Administration cares if he stacks the bodies of drug dealers like cordwood, it’s none of our business.
