I’m going to date myself here but I had the exact same problem in a 1966 social studies class. The teacher went as far to tell us no recorders were allowed. She was afraid she was going to get reported to the school board. Her views were the same as you experienced.
Actually, they LOVE democracy because it is only a matter of time before it turns into socialism (Tocqueville) and then totalitarianism where individuals who DARE to “think” outside their allowed box will be eliminated (Solzhenitsyn/Dostoevsky).
There is no individualism in ANY worldview apart from Christianity which created the concepts of Free Will and Individual natural rights from God only. It is the most rational religion because it is in line with Natural Law (subsidiarity inside the Natural Family (which is the ONLY religion which gave motherhood dignity and worth (Catholic Canon)).
Everyone has faith (a religion)-—just SOME faith is more RATIONAL than others-—and Christianity created The Age of Reason and US Constitution, Modern Science, the Mind of Newton (A Creationist) and the Minds of Tesla (father Orthodox Priest) and Wright Bros. (Father a Bishop is a church).
There is no compromise with Evil (Devil) and with their baby-killing, sodomy, pederasty, misogynistic, effeminate “cultures”- which promote perversions and evil, irrational use of the human body—which destroys Reason, Science (Natural Laws).
Communism was invented by the NWO globalists (Lucifereans) to destroy the Catholic Church and Orthodox Church from within (totally infiltrated now along with all mainstream Protestant churches paid and supported by Soros/Rothschild devil worshippers. They took over all of culture (Hollywood first) so children can NEVER think like a Washington, Adams or Jefferson. They program desires, beliefs/worldviews into YOUR children. Now mother and father have little influence—which is where individualism and agency ORIGINATE.
Children thus programmed, will have ignorant, tribal minds where contradictions are “good” and “normal” and Slavery is Freedom and boys are girls for radical egalitarianism—to reduce everyone to interchangeable drones (objects) with NO IDENTITY—NO biological connections, NO History so “Utopia” can be created for them in their ARTIFICIAL WORLDS where dependency is embedded and the inability to think critically (integrate the brain how God Designed)...just non-thinking “bots” for the State/Corporate gods.
We are ONLY a Constitutional Republic-—the MOST Free system in the history of man. The US Constitution has to be destroyed so the Marxists can kill the individuals, esp. the useless eaters and return the masses back to the serf/peasant/slave days which lasted MUCH LONGER than the little brief City on a Hill.

THe key word here is “completing”. They started taking over the educational system 40 years ago and now have a generation of teachers teaching the next generation of teachers how to swallow their propaganda.
Critical thinking and history have been bred out of the system.
Some millenials may be capable of “boning up” but most of them have never been taught how to, and all of them have been taught to accept what they hear from the pop culture and media/Hollywood figures who, of course, possess tremendous expertise and wisdom when it comes to world affairs...(aka “Cher”)...

Small reel to reel battery powered tape recorders were readily available in 1966.
I actually had one in 1962.
When I was in High-School in Florida, it was required by the State that all schools teach a class on “Americanism vs Communism.”
Why ? They have been spoon fed communism as early as grade school : )

I’m old enough to remember when public schools taught American and world history, as well as Civics.
We learned how our government is supposed to work (tricameral / checks & balances) and why it’s the best system possible; we also learned of the evil done by Hitler, Stalin, and Mao in world history and current events.
IOW, we were educated about BOTH Jeffersonian democracy and communism; but we were shown WHY the former is good, the latter evil.
That public school teaching has been completely undone and reversed in the past 30 years. Students are not being educated at all. They’ve no clue how our democratic republic is supposed to work, and they think communism is perfectly summed up by a song written by a dead Beatle, therefore it must be cool.
The problem I have with home schooling is that a lot of those students’
parents / teachers are teaching only the basic positives about America’s constitution and the Founding Fathers, history and civics. That’s good, in that the public school Marxist indoctrination is being countered.
But they are failing to teach anything at all about world history or communism, as if they fear any knowledge of the subject might hypnotize their kids into commies.
Every home schooled graduate I have talked with has no clue what the terms “communism” or “socialism” even mean.
The result is these kids are not prepared to fight it, because they cant recognize it when it’s staring them in the face.
Only 1/3 of the colonists wanted to break away from England during the Revolutionary War. Pretty amazing.
Yeah, it’s sort of mind-boggling to me that barely 25 years ago, communism was completely discredited, collapsed, seemingly tossed onto the scrap heap of history on top of fascism, Nazism, etc. But in the interim, history is slowly being rewritten.

Foley High School, Foley, AL, Home schooled by teacher-mother while living in Colombia, South America, Athens High School, Athens, AL, and Columbia Military Academy, Columbia, TN.
As far as the recorder, I don’t know. It was a small Japanese unit my father bought me from a store in Panama City, Panama on a trip back from S.A in 1962.
It was about a foot square and two inches high. The reels were about 3” in diameter. It was so cheap that it was not constant-speed, but the speed over the head changed according to how much tape was on each reel.
My wife’s nephew is a millennial who went to college and bought the whole leftist program hook, line and sinker. He came out a Christian hating atheist, wants the government to run everything. Hates capitalism and business.
He works at a hospital in accounting. My wife is an accountant in a hospital and asks him can’t you do the math and see what you want cannot possibly work?
I want to smack the little pri*& upside the head and ship him and his commie wife to North Korea and after a month ask him how that wonderful workers paradise was for them.
The high schools are teaching nothing about the failure of communism and they sure as hell are not getting it in the colleges and universities, only it’s praises. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. American communism and it’s fall will drag the world into a new dark age.
Even if the Millennials did in fact know the horrors about Communism, do you really think it would have made much of a difference? As far as I can tell, they’d STILL support it anyways, even if they had enough knowledge on the subject to be scholars and know full well about the horrors.
Karl Marx, if I must remind you, knew quite a bit about the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror, certainly enough about them to know full well that it was a bloodbath, and yet not only did he try to enact the exact same disaster that befell the French Revolution and Reign of Terror, he even advocated for doubling down on the bloodshed when Communism takes the helm. And let’s not forget Jean-Paul Sartre, who based on his comments defending the Munich terrorists in the Olympics, actually said that the Revolutionaries in the 1793 “probably didn’t kill enough people.” As far as I can tell, even if people actually do learn from their history, they’ll repeat it anyways. Otherwise, Karl Marx would avoid creating Communism precisely BECAUSE he’d know it would cause mass bloodshed and want to avoid it precisely BECAUSE he knew enough about the French Revolution to know about the massive bloodshed.

Yeah, he most certainly knew enough about the history to accurately state it was a massive bloodbath, yet that knowledge/learning didn’t stop him from wanting to create an even WORSE bloodbath in what is essentially a redo.
How many millennials know that Stalin purposely and intentionally starved 7 million Ukrainians to death in the earl 1930s?
I wonder if it is more or fewer than the 1 in 10 millennials who know what the phrase “separation of powers” means (reported yesterday on some thread here in FR).
