The nation got to see the best and the brightest that the Republicans and Democrats had to offer last night at Hofstra University. Here are six takeaways from the debate:
1. Somebody forgot to tell the moderator that he was supposed to moderate and not debate Donald Trump. Lester Holt, of the Nobody But Clinton network, was clearly in the tank for Hillary Clinton. I suspect he was secretly auditioning to be her press secretary. Just tally the number of times Holt interrupted Trump and pressed him on follow up questions and then compare that number to Hillarys. As we say in Dixie, Hillary got some home-cookin'.
2. Hillary Clinton does not hold the American people in high esteem. She previously referred to us as a Basket of Deplorables and irredeemable. But during the debate she accused us of having an implicit bias against African-Americans. She seems to believe the only way to redeem all of us gun-toting, Bible-clinging Deplorables is to shame us into submission.
3. If Donald Trumps record on women is fair game, then so is Hillarys. She needs to be called out for taking money from countries that treat women as second-class citizens. She needs to be called out for the terrible things she said about her husbands lady friends. Hillary also took a swipe at Trumps achievements. She said the only reason he was successful was because of his father. To be fair, Trump could argue that the only reason for Hillarys success is because of her husband.
4. Trump needs to let go of the birther stuff even if the Mainstream Media wont. And he needs to either release his tax returns or come up with a better excuse for why he wont.
5. There was no clear winner but that does not mean Trump lost. In spite of the Mainstream Medias disgusting narrative, millions of Americans tuned in to discover that Trump does not wear gold-lined bed sheets or burn crosses at Mar-a-Lago.
6. There is bipartisan agreement that Hillary should never do another shoulder shimmy on national television. Ever.
you already missed the trigger "law and order"Holt... now get ready for trigger "Stop and Frisk"Holt..follow-up...follow-up!!!
4. Birther stuff.
I actually think Trump has a trump card up his sleeve on this one. At any rate, he is playing it to his advantage. A week or so back he had the media eating out of his hand waiting for him to say something about the birth certificate. And he used that spotlight to get free coverage of all the generals and admirals who endorsed him and then at the end he stuck it to Hitlery and exposed her as the person who raised the birther question in the first place.
The media and Hitlery are spinning like crazy to try to keep that from sticking to them.
Disclosure: My personal opinion is that there is something fishy with the BC. I don’t know what. Not necessarily the place he was born, but something. Fact: We have NOT seen the BC.
4. Tax returns. He doesn’t need to release them and he doesn’t need to have an excuse why he doesn’t. How many of you would make your tax returns public? How many of the media would? Lester Holt? Bueller?
Superb post. Thank you.
Lois Lerner's husband, Michael Miles, is a partner at the mega law firm of Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP. A portion of his bio reads:
Michael also advises on consolidated return issues, the general taxation of corporations and shareholders, the taxation of regulated investment companies, and the application of withholding rules (including FATCA). He has substantial experience in advising clients on the tax consequences of proposed mergers and other reorganizations, reinsurance transactions, stock and asset acquisitions, and dispositions, distributions, and redemptions.
Before joining Sutherland, Michael served as an attorney in the Office of the Chief Counsel of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). He has more than 30 years of experience in handling federal tax controversies, first for the IRS and now for the firms corporate and individual clients, as well as substantial experience in obtaining rulings for clients on corporate tax and other matters and in practicing before the IRS.
I find it interesting that Ms. Lerner retained her maiden name, a common practice in DC. Although a date of marriage wasn't found, they have two daughters, well into their 20s.
I wonder how many times her husband used his prior affiliations at the IRS to extract better deals for his clients? These two people are players practiced in the "Aristocracy of Pull."
"Aristocracy of Pull" would be an understatement. Thanks for sharing this... it's totally new to me but explains several things about her attitude. DC is so corrupt in an organized semi-lawful way...
You’re kind - I just re-read it - lots of typos etc... but thanks for liking the ideas.
‘If he’s under audit, you don’t put in public what is still under investigation. In Trump’s case, we’re probably talking millions of dollars difference in what is or isn’t accepted or not accepted by the IRS.
And the flimsy statement that the IRS says that an audit doesn’t mean you can’t release your records fails to take into account the need to settle differences. IT’s like telling a suspect that he can waive his rights and talk to the police. Yes, he can. Is it smart? No, it isn’t.
Finally, I don’t care about Trump’s taxes. We’re talking a tax record from when he was a private citizen. I’m not interested in private citizen tax returns. I’m interested in politician’s tax returns. I want to see how and where they got their money since I know what their low salary actually is. Like Clinton being worth 200 million bucks on a 180,000 a year salary. I’m interested in that.
I know where a businessman primarily in real estate got his money, and it wasn’t from my tax dollars.’

Thank you!!! Very clear insight into the issue.
I really have no interest in seeing Trump’s tax returns. He made his money honestly.
I am interested in seeing who contributed to Clinton’s foundation and what favors she owes for those contributions.
Probably most people feel the same. Hence, my new tagline, based on Trump’s speech this afternoon. I’ll change it after he is elected. :)
Clinton has made this campaign entirely about her and her accomplishments. So when she has a bad day as a candidate, its devastating. On the other hand, when Trump has a bad day it doesnt hurt him.
For Trump, even on his very worst day, his campaign knows they get ‘change’ out of the equation. With Clinton, voters get someone who is not Trump....
Hillary is the exact opposite of what voters want; there is no market for experience. She may think its to her benefit......its actually a determent...shows how out of touch she is. (hat tip NY POST editorial-—edited excerpt)
Maybe some middle ground between "slick answer" and incoherent rambling might be a good idea. And either way, letting Hillary completely off the hook is inexcusable. At this point, he is not courting his base - and if that support will be undercut by having competent answers then he is in deep trouble - but he needs to convince the "independents" and "undecideds" to vote for him instead of Hillary.
I won’t disagree with you. He needs to REALLY hit her hard the next time - on corruption and competence. If she (or the so-called moderator, or the people at the town hall) bring up crap like the birther thing, or women, etc., etc. - he has to say that these issues have been discussed, and that he’d rather talk about other issues of importance - such as using a tax-free foundation for a pay-to-play scam, not protecting our personnel in Libya, setting the entire Mideast on fire, her dissing of at least 1/4 of the American people, etc., etc.
