MIAMI, Sept. 25 (UPI) — Miami Marlin’s 24-year-old ace pitcher, Jose Fernandez, was killed early Sunday in a boating accident.
The team confirmed his death in a statement. “The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of Jose Fernández. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.”
The team cancelled Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves.
ESPN reported that, according to multiple reports, police got a call of a possible boating accident about 3 a.m.
Law enforcement officials found a 30-foot boat that had crashed in to the rocks off Miami Beach and overturned. Three people, including the promising left-hander, were found dead and authorities were looking for survivors.
Fernandez, a star young pitcher who was initially scheduled to start in the Sunday game, had that start pushed back to Monday so Adam Conley, returning from the disabled list, could start.
A Cuban defecter, Fernandez played baseball at a Tampa high school before being drafted as the Marlin’s first-round pick in 2011, the Sun Sentinel reported.

Square grouper is what I heard they were called, but with the money he was making I really doubt that’s what he was doing. He probably WAS fishing and maybe drinking he may have been coming back after fishing for swordfish which is often done at night.
This time of year the mangrove snapper bite only gets better after dark,yellowtail are a good bet, mutton snapper are available,porgies,stray kingfish,there is a lot you can catch at night.
RIP. He was an outstanding pitcher for the Marlins. This truly is a sad story for Florida and the Cuban community.
He seemed like a very nice young man.

A few years ago the St Louis Cardinals lost a promising young rookie...I forget his name, but I think he was in a motorcycle crash in the Dominican Republic (perhaps that was his home country?). Another very sad case.
And I still remember Thurman Munson (is that right?) the Yankee catcher dying in a plane crash sometime around 1977...sad.
Always sage advice. Except I say 1:00 AM. Pretty much 99.9% of the time, I am home and in bed by 1AM. As a result, I am still alive, healthy and out of trouble.
A number of years ago a friend and his son were passengers on a boat on Lake St. Clair (S.E. Michigan) being driven by a guy who was drunk and they T-boned another boat, killing one of those passengers.........The drunk driver was rightfully convicted of manslaughter.......

We called them moon groupers as well in my era because they fell from the sky or at least were tossed from the deck of a freighter
I did not mean to imply that is what he was doing but it was a reply to no one being on the water in the middle of the night
I am extremely familiar with Florida coast waters from Egmont Key off Tampa to Stump Pass and Boca Grande to Naples/Marco
And not so much from Cape Romano to Sable and Florida Bay but then Largo to Haulover I’m again my familiarity realm
And plenty people are on the water at night fishing and just having fun
And btw the first reports are there no signs alcohol was involved

Swordfishing has been done at night for some time both off the East Coast and the Keys. We run to 1600’-1750’ off here in the Keys,mostly in the daytime and fish the bottom. At night they come closer to the top and are usually caught from 300 feet down to near the surface.
One of our captains was instrumental in starting the daytime rage for swordfishing down here about ten years ago. Now his son is following in his footsteps as are hundreds of others.
I wasn’t on the thread then, but ok.
Here it seems wherever you go you have to cross a shipping lane. I hate them at daytime let alone at night.
Tavares was driving drunk and speeding. The crash killed him and his girlfriend.
Too early to know if alcohol was involved here, but in any case, life is fragile under the best of circumstances. But, we don't often consider the risks of things we do.
Thoughts and prayers for the Fernandez family. He was every thing they say he was and more. A huge loss for the Marlins and Miami.
