Earth-like planet found orbiting the star next door
AP via CBC ^ | 08/24/2016

After scanning the vast reaches of the cosmos for Earth-like planets where life might exist, astronomers have found one right next door. NASA's New Horizons probe, the fastest spacecraft launched, left Earth hurtling toward Pluto at about 36,000 mph. At that speed, it would take more than 78,000 years to get there.

Thanks. Interesting link, but I keep reading “doesn’t yet exist” for all of the pieces.

Matching velocities is something inherent in either method. Using another body eliminates the need to accelerate tons, and tons, of mass for protection from cosmic rays, micro-meteors, and provides for subsistence, as long as this body had water and various other elements which could be mined by those aboard it.

That is if we wish to send people. If we only send DNA, in the form of some sort of organism (water bear, bacterium, or even viruses perhaps) then a lone craft of much smaller size would probably be the best alternative.

That’s not imagination, that’s hormonal imbalance, according to our mono-sexual overlords.

There are a couple humorous posts I’ve seen other places. One wonders what the reaction of the alien civilization is to our shooting tiny projectiles toward their planet. “This means WAR!”
The other offers to be the manager of the near side moon base constructed to hold the giant lasers. This from the future emperor.

A plant that is tidally locked (one face always to the sun, is not earth-like. I doubt it has atmosphere because the frozen night side would be incredibly cold and the atmosphere would freeze to ice.

Don’t forget the reptile Gorn!

I was purposefully focusing on the "other" outerspace show of the mid-sixties, Lost in Space. Gorn would be too serious for that one. Just imagine if somehow Dr. Smith wound up on the Enterprise? I don't think even Kirk can overcome that problem.
