This version from 1958 put a whole new spin on the tune. Bing could kick back and sing a song about being lazy, but Ella turned it into art. Paul Weston’s backing was exceptional.

”ALL ALONE”

It turned out that 1924 would be a great year for Irving with a lot of successful songs. This song received its first recording from the greatest “belter” in the business. It was a horn-based acoustic recording, and you can hear why “belting” was necessary. Note that it was still in the intro-and-chorus format. That’s Irving and Al in the photo.

Where was Al Jolson from and why did he roll his “r’s” like he did? I never really cared for his style. No offense. :)

Jolson was from Washington DC and was born in 1888. He started his career when recording was in its infancy. As a result, he sang in the operatic manner, in which the R’s were rolled. He carried that over to the recording era.

”ALL ALONE”

A song from a previous generation could be made current by giving it a new sound. This tune was natural for a string-accompanied ballad, and Frank tried his hand with it in 1962. Gordon Jenkins provided the string arrangement. Note that the intro has disappeared. The soprano at the end is Noellie Norman, who voiced the high parts in the Tokens’ “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.”
