Where was Al Jolson from and why did he roll his “r’s” like he did? I never really cared for his style. No offense. :)
Jolson was from Washington DC and was born in 1888. He started his career when recording was in its infancy. As a result, he sang in the operatic manner, in which the R’s were rolled. He carried that over to the recording era.
