Justice Department says it will end use of private prisons: Report The Justice Department is reportedly planning to stop using private prisons.
Shares of GEO Group and Corrections Corporation of America were originally halted on the news, but have since reopened, falling more than 20 percent.

I hate the CCA; they have vested interest in more prisons, more “attendees”; that is inherently evil akin to texts in Isaiah and Amos and others.
That said, taking these over, perhaps like Venezuela took over corporations? That is illegal.
This will also hit the Clintons in the pocketbook; look how the CCA lobbyists have worked with the clinton foundation.

How does this stop that from happening? The buck still is going to stop at the justice system that farmed it out.

We could all use a government of the high minded. The problem is, high minded is about the last thing in the world that governments tend to want to be. It’s all about prestige and power.
Except that the number of lawsuits coming out of private prisons is the same or higher. 23 years in, 2 1/2 to go.

I’m okay with this in theory. If it’s a business, it needs to make money. This model makes money through mass incarceration.
It’s time to stop putting so many in jail for health issues like drug use. It’s cramming these prisons and creating a “madrasa” of sorts for criminal education — thus perpetuating the business model.
Of course the ‘rats will have the most base and corrupt reasons for doing what they do. That’s just a given. But if the end result is some good, then I’m not of a mindset to cut off our noses to spite our faces.
Prisons make a lot of sense when dealing with violent psychopaths or those pending deportation. Drug offences? Not so much. Here is a breakdown of what people are in Federal prison for. Upshot is, a whole lot of folks are there for drug crimes and most will eventually be released. Prisons are a very expensive tool and not very effective when you consider recidivism rates. We shouldn’t be rushing to use them except when absolutely necessary. Minimize the amount of space avaialable, and you force prioritization. Which is the way it should be.

Maybe they should get bonuses or something when their incarceration systems produce low recidivism rates. As it stands now, seems like both private or public prison systems would want a high recidivism rate, if prisoners are considers units. I think maybe prisons are allowed to be so brutal because they want prisoners to become brutalized and broken if they aren’t already, so they have a harder time adjusting when their sentence is completed and will commit more crime.
I don’t know, it’s a hard one. Private or public, it shouldn’t be a country club. But letting rampant rape and other brutalizing go on isn’t right either and would only seem to ensure they exit broken with higher recidivism potential.

Mexico, the new Australia?
People whose friends were of moderate means might even choose Mexico if they had to go to jail somewhere. The system is different even if the housing is crude; supplies from friends are virtually unlimited and there are even conjugal visits. It’s more like camping than like jail.
It’s not contrarianism, but simply a recognition that the political positions of the Methodist church are a particular metric.
Not smart to assume DOJ policy, in these days, has anything to do with what’s right.
My S-I-L works in a Private Prison that houses Illegal Aliens.
The Warden previously ran a Federal Maximum Security Prison and came out of retirement to take the position.
The only difference is the Employees are not members of a Public Service Union making Top Dollar Salaries and Pensions.
I guess “for profit” Healthcare should be banned as well.

Once the Court System is Privatized, you may have a point.
Yeah actually you do need to do your research. Even a broken clock can be right. And privatized prisons has turned into a real mess. Having corporations that need people to go to jail funding politicians campaigns creates massive problems. Basically all the same government corruption we’re used to, only instead of “harmless” stuff like bad paint on the roads people are losing their freedom just to ensure profits.
Not sure what healthcare has to do with private prisons. Apples and oranges.
