FBI chief calls for national talk over encryption vs. safety

FBI Director James Comey gestures during an address to the American Bar Association annual meeting

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The FBI's director said Friday the agency is collecting data to present next year in hopes of sparking a national conversation about law enforcement's increasing inability to access encrypted electronic devices.

Speaking Friday at the American Bar Association annual conference in San Francisco, James Comey said the agency was unable to access 650 of 5,000 electronic devices investigators attempted to search over the last 10 months. He said the problem is only going to get worse without a discussion about the technology.

Comey says encryption technology makes it impossible in a growing number of criminal cases to search electronic devices. But he said it's up to U.S. citizens, rather than the FBI or government officials, to decide whether to modify the technology to help law enforcement access the devices.

Comey's concern with encryption emerged earlier this year when the FBI engaged in a high-profile legal fight with Apple over accessing data from a locked iPhone used by one of the two shooters in the San Bernardino, California, terrorist attack. The legal fight remained unresolved because the FBI dropped its court challenge after it said it found a way to access the shooter's iPhone.

James Comey is a traitor to the American people.

His name belongs beside Bendict Arnold.

FBI Director Comey wants to open a "discussion" on why he wants to cripple encryption on computers, mobile devices, and tablets by requiring government accessible back doors in all such devices. He does not seem to know that any back door for government is a back door for the bad guys too! Secure Encryption is only binary. It either IS secure, or it IS NOT. You cannot have it both ways. — PING!

He looks like a young Lindsay Graham.

“We want all encryption to be breakable so that the US, crime syndicates, foreign governments, and the pervert next door can see and know all of your secrets. You’ve heard it said that a society with guns is a safe society. I am here to say that a society without any security is a society that gives every bank account and every naked camera picture, to those who truly want it. Please help me help these folks.”

A “national talk” is there buzzword for explaining their demands.
FU Comey. You don’t get to simultaneously import nearly two million moslems from war zones, and tens of millions of Mexicans, and THEN explain to me I need to give up my privacy so you can keep me safe.

FU I wont do what you tell me!

Comey has absolutely no credibility left. What happened to those 150 FBI Agents that were going to walk if the AG didn't indict? Huh? Certainly Comey laid out the case for her crimes!!!

The Government's zealous intent on opening your encrypted communications have been around a long time.

STATEMENT OF THE VICE PRESIDENT , TUESDAY, October 1, 1996

Technology has been these technical details way out of date, but you get the jest of the statement - BIG GOVRNMENT needs to know everything. The Government has been in bed with MS, Google and Fakebook.

Just putting this out there.

If you have, say, a 1MB data pipe, on average, you probably only use a few percent of the bandwidth. You probably have maybe a dozen or so Google searches a day.

What if you filled you data pipe with a lot more info (maybe 3 or 4 times your normal) that is encrypted. What if you had something that generated Google searches, thousands a day, using randomly retrieved words and groups of words off of the terror alert word list?

What if everyone did that, Mr pretend FBI director?

Would you want to talk about that, too?

The FAA started a series of regional “conversations” about their NextGen air traffic control disaster. They didn’t like how the “conversations” were going when hundreds of thousands of people told them off nationwide. Their response? “STFU and enjoy your new jet highway over your heads 24x7. We will damn well do whatever we want and there’s nothing you can do about it. So piss off.”

Privacy is privacy. Always has been, by definition. The Constitution says so. You want to enforce the law? Wait until someone actually breaks it. I know, I know: conspiracy, collusion, etc. Find another way, like truth serum, eh? (/sarc)

Then when they do something bad, hang 'em or fry them publicly so all may see the consequences. And do it summarily.
