Migrants and Smugglers Won’t Be Stopped by Donald Trump’s Wall, Ranchers Say
New York Times ^ | July 24, 2016 | DAN BARRY

...

The solution favored among ranchers is infused with a fatalism that nothing will change — government being government, and the cartels always one step ahead — so why bother. But here it goes:

Intensive, round-the-clock patrols along the border are required for a fence or wall to work; otherwise, those determined to cross will always find a way. But, they argue, if you have boots on the ground, you will have no need for anything so beautiful as the Great Wall of Trump.

It is easy, from a distance, to dismiss the ranchers along the border as right-wing Chicken Littles whose complaints hint of racism. Too easy, in fact.

Ranchers will say they saw people with backpacks trekking across their property last week, last night, early this morning. Some will say they have grudging agreements of access with drug cartels, as long as trespassers stay far from their homes. Dogs bark, motion lights flicker, things go missing.

The unnerving has become everyday life, Mr. Ashurst says, and then he asks my colleague and me where we live. Metropolitan New York, we answer.

Nice, Mr. Ashurst says, still scowling. “But how would you like it?” he asks, referring to the ebb-and-flow parade of strangers, some armed, past his door. “Do you think you’re more important than the poor moron who has the misfortune to live along the border?”

True, the overall number of migrants has plummeted in the last 15 years or so. Here, in what the Border Patrol categorizes as the Tucson sector — about 90,000 square miles, with 262 miles of border — there were 63,397 arrests in the 2015 fiscal year, compared with 10 times that in the 2001 fiscal year.

Walls work.

Correct. The liberals first cry was “racism!” Now it is, “it won’t work!”

Israel’s wall seems to be working.

Also, I think South Korea’s “wall” seems to have put a crimp on North Korean illegals.

Stop giving them sanctuaries and free bus rides to unsuspecting communities. Stop giving them entitlements, free medical care, schooling and drivers licenses. Stop giving the luxury of knowing they won’t be caught. Stop allowing employers to harbor them with not so much as a wrist slap. PUNISH THEM for their crimes and don’t let them out of prison, then ship them home.

Build the wall, the Israelis did it. They work - the White House has one. Stop it all and they will go home.

Until re-unification, East Germany pretty well had the situation in hand. Physical barriers along a border work going both directions.

Physical barriers are force multipliers. They are part of an integrated defense system. This NYT article is just another worthless attack on Trump.

Much easier to patrol a long distance if there is a substantial wall.

The wall will stop 80% or more of the border jumpers. That will bring a good percentage of the illegal entry problem under control so the US Border Patrol can deal with it.

Fences (walls) make good neighbors. Respect for property rights is not only common sense, it is a preserved American right.

The entire article is disconnected - each point disconnected from the last.

BUT -> it's worth suffering through this paragraph just to enjoy the final line that some editor inserted at the last minute, surely so the Times could get their Paid Content check from Obama ... This paragraph actually makes sense ... and then it gets blown up by a Social Hypnosis line ...

"It is telling, though, that Mr. Ladd never used to carry a gun or a cellphone. That changed six years ago, when his friend Robert Krentz Jr., known to help people no matter their nationality, was shot to death on his family’s ranch after radioing his brother that he had come upon another migrant in distress. His unsolved murder caused a national outcry, and it led to state legislation intended to crack down on illegal immigration. It also prompted Mr. Ladd’s wife to demand that he carry a cellphone and a Glock.

But, really, what is a Glock going to do?"

Hmmm ... what possible good could a gun be when you're alone out in the wilderness and your friend recently got shot and the police are 2 hours away and drug cartels are running around. What' POSSIBLE good could a gun be, I mean "But, really, what is a Glock going to do?" Personally, I love that line.

“Is that because they aren’t arresting them?”

One word answer: Y E S

The Bush/Obama “Catch & Release” program(s) has made many of the BP agents simply throw up their hands.
But not in Pinal County.

Look up the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office program of cross certifying BP agents.

Well of course there must and will be patrols and more border patrol officers hired. Charges that to Meh-he-co too! All those American companies that are saving billions by making products south of the border will move back or pay too.
Cheaper products mean nothing to someone out of work.

If a wall or fence won't stop intruders, why has odumbo increased the height of the fence surrounding the WH? Ah, he has human protection behind that fence. Guess a fence/wall is but a temporary deterrent

I have read some mockingly say all you will need is a ladder or rope to get over a wall. Where are the example of wall planned?

When the NYT stops using passwords for computer access, and locks on doors, and the executives there stop locking their doors at home, then they can start preaching about how useless deterrence is. Until then, they act like Paul Ryan and I will continue to ignore their advice on how to live my life.

They are going to have to add in Semitic equipment to detect the tunnels too. Stop the watering stations. And the catch and release. There has been no slow down, it’s gone underground and with the catch and release stats are off.

Who said that a wall ONLY will stop illegal immigration? It surely will not but it can delay entry sufficiently for patrols to interdict and arrest or turn away illegals.

The idea a properly constructed wall of sufficient height and depth beneath the ground along with the use of the available technology cannot slow to a trickle illegal border crossings is just plain ignorant thinking.

And just what makes these ranchers on the border experts in what will and will not work?
