GENEVA (Reuters) - The earth is on track for its hottest year on record and warming at a faster rate than expected, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Thursday.
Temperatures recorded mainly in the northern hemisphere in the first six months of the year, coupled with an early and fast Arctic sea ice melt and "new highs" in heat-trapping carbon dioxide levels, point to quickening climate change, it said.
June marked the 14th straight month of record heat, the United Nations agency said. It called for speedy implementation of a global pact reached in Paris last December to limit climate change by shifting from fossil fuels to green energy by 2100.
"What we’ve seen so far for the first six months of 2016 is really quite alarming," David Carlson, director of the WMO’s Climate Research Program, told a news briefing.
"This year suggests that the planet can warm up faster than we expected in a much shorter time... We don’t have as much time as we thought."
The average temperature in the first six months of 2016 was 1.3° Celsius (2.4° Fahrenheit) warmer than the pre-industrial era of the late 19th Century, according to space agency NASA.
Under the Paris Agreement, nearly 200 governments agreed to limit global warming to well below 2°C (3.6°F) above pre-industrial levels, while "pursuing efforts" for a ceiling of 1.5°C - a lower limit already close to being reached.
The last month with global temperatures below the 20th century average was December 1984, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Definitely not consistent with my own personal experience. The hottest times of the year seem to be getting milder over the last few years.

Did hit 100+ in several places in North Texas today, but was only 99 at DFW airport (I live nearby).
I recall 1980 when we had 52 or 54 days in a row of 100+ temps and quite a few above 110. I had just bought a new house on a 1/2 acre lot and had to water the newly hydro-mulched lawn by moving hoses and sprinklers around until wee hours of the morning to keep it from burning up.
It’s been a cold summer in the Seattle area. We had our pool open since Memorial Day. Today was the first day we were able to use it.

OK seriously...it’s been hot here in East Texas, but not abnormally so. I think in the past few days it finally topped 100º but just barely. Not sure, but according to weather guy predictions...
Not even close to 1997, when I saw my thermometer out back at 107º I know and I think 108º. The hottest I’ve seen since then was 104º a couple of times, and 102º maybe 103º a few times in north Louisiana from 2006 to 2012.
Here where I live now, a normal summer before 1998 was up to 104º or so, occasionally we’d see a really hot day get to 105º. Almost never higher, except that one summer, I think 1997. Days that got up to 102º were normal, and expected for this area, 104º wasn’t anything to write home about.
I haven’t seen it top 102º here since I moved back in 2012. I don’t remember for sure, but I think 101º was the highest we got last summer.
I’ve looked up a lot of info on the climate change issue, it’s definitely a scam, and I’m glad to see so many people here know it already.

It was stopped by an ice floe, not sea ice.
In the arctic, the ice reaches its lowest extent in September, so in july there is still a lot of ice and ice floes drifting around and if your boat gets caught up in a floe you will have to hire an ice breaker to get you out. Or just sit there being drug around by the floe until the floe breaks up.
This is why Shell oil doesn't go into the arctic to drill until July and they take two ice breakers with them, just in case.

50+ years ago I was in The Alps and we visited the Rhone Glacier cave! You mean to tell me the Rhone Glacier hasn’t melted yet? Wow!
I don’t think this is the hottest year ever for Texas. It is the end of July and I don’t think it has actually hit 100 in Houston yet. Maybe today’s the day but that is rare that it hasn’t happened yet.
Very nice climate/weather/temperature in northern California this year. I hope someone is updating Gore’s doomsday models with current data!!!
