Is It Curtains for Cruz's Career?
Rush Limbaugh.com ^ | July 21, 2016 | Rush Limbaugh

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: By the way, folks, here's another just a little throwaway question. Does it surprise you that somebody saying "vote your conscience" would be booed practically out of an arena? Vote your conscience. Boo! Vote your conscience. Boo! Leave! Get out! I mean, I know I'm not including context here, but just stop and think of this for a second. Cruz's message is vote your conscience, and all hell rained down on him.

Now, the context is that vote your conscience, I know, happens to be a rallying cry for many of the Never Trumpers. And further context is that vote your conscience could be code language for how in the world can you possibly vote for this guy Trump if you have a conscience? And it's obviously, I think, what a lot of people thought Cruz meant, and that's why the boos. But just without any context, somebody says vote your conscience and gets booed.

Here's where I think Cruz could have done better. And, look, armchair quarterbacking, morning-after hindsight's always cheap and easy, but I think it's an important point. Last night Cruz complained that freedom was under assault. And he's right. It wasn't a complaint; it was a warning; it was an acknowledgment. But what he didn't do is make the clear difference that a Clinton and Trump presidency would make to freedom itself and to the Constitution itself.

It wasn't until this morning, under intense questioning from the Texas delegation that Cruz said he wasn't gonna vote for Hillary. He didn't say that last night. He left it for implication, or inference. I think had he drawn this comparison, he acknowledged that there's no contest between Trump and Hillary when it comes to voting to preserve and expand freedom, he didn't explicitly do that. Hillary Clinton's a clear and present danger to the Constitution. And Cruz, a lot of speakers made the point last night, but Cruz didn't. Not expressly.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Now, Cruz was asked about his pledge. They all took the pledge on the same stage last August to support the eventually nominee. And they asked Cruz about that, the Texas delegation. And he said that that day was "abrogated" when this became personal. "The day that pledge was abrogated was the day this became personal." He says, "I'm not gonna get into criticizing or attacking Donald Trump, but I'm just going to give you this response.

"I am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father." And he mentioned this a couple of other times and used the words, "I'm not gonna be a puppy dog here in servitude to a guy accuses my dad of assisting in the JFK assassination." And again, in saying that, it just takes everything that Cruz said the night before in his speech off the table. We eventually got the big reveal.

Everybody said, "Gee, what's that? What's going on? What the hell here?"

All this in-depth analysis, and it boils down to that.

Some of the in-depth analysis was, you know, there's a lot of Never Trumpers out there, and the Never Trumpers, they're a loyal bunch, and Cruz wants to be considered the leader. Cruz wants to be the guy. He wants to be the guy that's considered the number one, consistent Never Trumper. And that's who he was playing to last night, at the expense of party loyalty. The Texas delegation was not happy.

I'm not certain what the future political career holds for Cruz but if he is in a position to run for president in the future, he's never getting my vote.

I think he just killed his career........Not to worry tho, he's an attorney after all and he won't suffer.

” ... at the expense of party loyalty.”

Forget party loyalty. Our nation is at stake. Our futures are at stake.

Ted has shown he would throw the nation under a bus for his own ego. #NeverCruz

Cruz will learn from this experience and maybe 8-10 years from now, become a viable Presidential candidate again.

He may learn something from this event but the real voters have long memories........

His self serving speech will be political fodder for any individual running against him in the future........

Nixon had served two terms in the House and one in the Senate, before two terms as VEEP, prior to running for the presidency. Unlike smarmy Teddy, President Nixon was BRILLIANT, had accomplished much, and yes, he really DID beat JFK, but didn't want to "harm the nation", so didn't fight his loss.

In every possible way, President Nixon was little Teddy's superior and Teddy is no Nixon; just as he is NO Reagan. All Cruz is, is a lousy POS.

I have not seen the following discussed. The Republicans in the Senate hate Ted. Mr. Trump with the move to let Ted speak and say what ever he wanted just allowed Ted to shoot himself in the foot politically speaking. I believe that the Republicans in the Senate now will thank Mr. Trump for that move. Two birds with one stone so to speak.

Cruz NEVER learns from his mistakes and is INELIGIBLE to be president!

Wake up....Teddy is a disgusting, stupid little man; to know him is to loathe him. And after last night, anyone with an IQ above room temperature, can't stand him. WAKE UP AND SEE REALITY!

Teddy boy first got personal. Trump left him alone up to that point. Trump doesn’t attack, he counter attacks and does so immediately.

sSPOT ON and what I kept saying last night! Using those “code words” were even WORSE than the non-endorsement.

Huh? I think you missed the second part on the page:

“Now, the context is that vote your conscience, I know, happens to be a rallying cry for many of the Never Trumpers.”

Limbaugh does acknowledge it and was looking to explain that to anyone who may have missed it. I for one haven’t cared for the NeverTrump movement and didn’t know that was their motto. Sooo, this was insightful for me. (By the way, I listened to this during lunch ~12:30 ET)

In answer to the title, it really depends on what Cruz does from here on out, but he's dug an awfully deep hole, and it wasn't out of conscience, and it wasn't necessary. My guess is that he's done, because if Trump isn't elected and Hillary is, he's going to catch the brunt of the blame, and if Trump is elected he's going to find himself in the same pack he worked so hard to break free from, and the others in that pack will have a vulnerability to exploit.

In short, all that work and expense he invested to make himself the legitimate second-runner goes down the drain, and he starts over. Totally unnecessary.

Whatever faults Nixon had, he very successfully rehabilitated himself twice, once after the 1962 gubernatorial race loss and after he resigned from the Watergate scandal. By the middle 1980's, Nixon was revered for his foreign policy expertise, and by the time Nixon passed away, he had done much to rehabilitate his image.

I can see Cruz going this same route--lay low for the next 3-4 years, then start a political comeback.

Cruz is a petulant child in an adult's body, who has NO accomplishments and whom almost nobody likes, so stop pushing him. Trump IS the nominee and your dislike of him is duly noted. You can shut up now and refrain from voting/vote for Hillary!

Obviously you doubt that Trump will be elected and/or ever get anything done.

You're benighted post is patently ridiculous and you need an attitude adjustment! Cruz lost, he is INELIGIBLE to be president anyway, Hillary would have beaten him anyway, and as president ( LOL, LOL, LOL !) it is Teddy who would not get ANYTHING that is good for this nation and her people, don! It is past time, for you, to see reality for what it is and stop drinking the CRUZ-AIDE; it melts the brain!

Then you are blind and uneducated!

I worked on both of President Nixon's winning presidential runs, I knew Mr. Nixon, and twee Teddy is NOTHING like that brilliant, good man.

Nixon really WAS brilliant; Cruz is stupid.

The left spent many decades going after Mr. Nixon, and finally managed to destroy him over something he had less than NOTHING to do with!

Mr. Nixon was a gentleman and cared deeply about this nation.

Cruz cares ONLY about himself and is a CONMAN.
