Lawmaker: Second Amendment Applies to Muskets, So Eliminate Assault Weapons
Pajama Media ^ | July 13, 2016 | Nicholas Ballasy

Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-N.C.) joined other Democrats to call for the reinstatement of the federal assault weapons ban, arguing that the Second Amendment only applies to muskets.

“This is something as a non-lawyer that I have had trouble with from the very beginning. When the framers of our Constitution considered the Second Amendment, they were talking about muskets,” Coleman said during a news conference outside of the Capitol Building on Tuesday.

And regulated at that time meant equipped and trained not controlled by a central government.

So then, the 1st amendment only applies to printing presses and shouting in town squares.

Ask this strict ultra originalist about the 10th Amendment and the Electoral College?

Yep - or ask her about the 19th Amendment and why she feels she has the right to vote, since it only applies to the women of the time.

Nawwww...it says “right to bear ARMS”, which applies to guns, no matter what the time frame.

Also knives, swords, bombs, rockets, ships, aircraft, railguns, particle beams, LASERS, MASERS, PHASERS, C-Beams that glitter in the dark ...

Ban the internet too then. After all, there was no net then and how many terrorists actively plot over the net?

Effing stupid people.

The big thing about the 2nd amendment no one seems to talk about is it’s not about self protection or hunting, it’s about the ability to rise against the government should the need arise. If they have assault weapons, so should the people.

Thomas Jefferson owned a .45 caliber 22-shot semiautomatic rifle. Two of them, actually; gave them to Lewis & Clark who used them extensively to discourage potential attackers.

The Puckle Gun, an early fully automatic (crank driven) rifle, was demonstrated to leaders of the Revolution. Not used only because production was limited.

The authors of the RKBA would have seen the M16 as a refinement of what they were familiar with, not as some unthinkable amazement not intended for the 2nd.

I guess we give “muskets” to all those security people with with which the privileged class surround themselves.

Would she approve of me carrying a pair of muskets everywhere?

... reminds me, I wanted to build a cap & ball pistol with the kids this year.

The 2nd Amendment also applied to fighting ships with cannon and private navies. Of course freedom comes with a price. It is estimated that 6,000 to 11,000 private fighting sailors (privateers) were captured by the British and died on the prison ships anchored in New York Harbor.

Ultra strict originalist? I think not, the 2nd amendment quite specifically said “ARMS”, and arms in context of the 2nd amendment was always considered to include more than just guns. This is where the anti-gun control crowd historically falls down as they have conceded the very concept of the 2nd amendment.

2nd applies to an option to oppose the government if the 1st fails to keep the government in check. If the government goes back to muskets we can talk about citizens being limited to muskets.

I doubt even the IRS is willing to ditch their “assault weapons” much less agencies with a need for “assault weapons” for national security.

Bonnie, you ignorant slut. They were talking about the most modern weapons available at the time.

British:
Brown Bess musket .766 calibre
British shot them badly, just aimed them into an area and then turned their head jst before pulling the trigger.

American:
.61 or.63 calibre muskets aimed and accuraely shot out to 100 yards and up.

Rifles;
.32 to .36 squirrel rifles. Very accurate.

It was hard to survive a musket wound.

Nor does it say muskets. It says arms. Keep and bear arms. Not keep and bear muskets.

F-—ing idiots. All of them.

[Democrats] call for the reinstatement of the federal assault weapons ban, arguing that the Second Amendment only applies to muskets.

First time I've seen democrats argue for the strict "Originalist" view of the US Constitution.

In 1776 the Constitution didn't guarantee homo weddings, abortions, welfare, anti-hate speech laws, Obamacare, title 9, Affirmative Action, women's voting rights, and a zillion other unwritten "Rights" that have been discovered in the last 240 years.

So, to be consistant, they would all have to be eliminated as well.

And are the democrats also arguing for slavery to be re-instated?

A musket with fixed bayonet wielded by trained infantrymen in massed ranks was formidable, indeed. The colonists lost many battles because most of their guns lacked bayonets.

But just think, an 18th or 19th century bayonet charge wasn’t much different technologically from a Spartan spear charge ca. 4th century B.C.

FWIW, Bonnie Watson Coleman represents NJ’s 12th district which is 75% white, 11% black. Go figure.
