I love machine guns. They dont call the selectors on automatic firearms fun switches for nothing, and I have yet to hand off a machine gun to someone and have it not bring a smile to their face (it brings me joy exposing people to full auto for the first time). For the sake of this article, the word machine gun will meet the ATFs definition: Any weapon which shoots, is designed to shoot, or can be readily restored to shoot, automatically more than one shot without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger.

As a side note, back in July of 2002 I visited my cousin who lived outside of Ft. Meyers in the boonies. On a Sunday afternoon, his neighbor about 1/4 mile down the road had some buddies over and they were shooting full autos and a .50 cal (boom!) My cousin said this was a regular event.
I asked him how the heck could the guy afford the rifles and all the ammunition and he said the guy was very well off since he owned a meat packing plant down there.......
Humping a M60, then later a 240B through terrain for days on end with a scout squad makes machine guns not so “fun” after awhile. Changing a barrel out after a couple of cans of ammo is also no fun. Clearing a jam and having it cook of rounds from the heat is also no fun. Keeping it clean in the field = no fun. Cleaning before handing it to the armorer = no fun. Breaking the charging handle and having to pay for it = no fun (usually for a month while the Army rapes your stipends)
Scouts Out!
Knob Creek Gun Range in KY has a twice a year machine gun shoot. I know there are videos out there.

Lots of $$$ being burned up.
Fortunately for us, the $200 tax has never been adjusted for inflation.Unfortunately, no matter how cheap the tax is, or how low the prices of the firearms might get, if it fires hundreds of rounds per minute, it's going to be expensive to feed.
when you join some branches of the military, they just give you one.

Yes but there’s always a hitch and that’s why you wrapped the word “give” in quote marks.
When I was a kid, we called someone who gave you something and then took it back, “Indian givers”.
I've seen videos of that event and it's an ammo dealer's dream come true.........
