Why People Love Trump: A Case Study of Milo Yiannopoulos
Harvard Political Review ^ | June 18, 2016 | Akash Wasil

Posted on 06/24/2016 11:23:41 AM PDT by Enchante

The rise of Yiannopoulos can help to explain the rise of Donald Trump. Both have attracted followers that feel silenced, ignored, and invalidated by the left. Both will continue to receive sympathy and exposure if their opponents continue to aggressively and instinctually dismiss their views. And perhaps both can be defeated—or at least weakened—through respectful and empathic discourse. More broadly, the story of Yiannopoulos is useful to understand today’s political climate. There is an ever-growing number of Americans—liberals and conservatives—who feel like their voices are not being heard. Americans are increasingly identifying with their party, race, gender, or sexuality—and are judging the quality of an argument on the identity of the speaker. A political system established to encourage discourse and compromise has succumbed to partisan bickering. In order to save it, we may need to confront those we most disagree with, listen empathically, and fight the urge to silence or invalidate them. Perhaps we can start with Milo Yiannopoulos.

Kind of an indirect way to approach the Trump phenomenon, but I think the author is right that pervasive political correctness created an oppressive atmosphere which Trump has blown wide open.

This is a student publication so it is not some professor saying these things (hard to find a professor who will approve of Trump or Milo, I imagine). Interesting view from a lone conservative on a very liberal campus....

The real reason for the rise of these two is that they talk common sense and both have an outrageous sense of humor. Also, the author doesn’t even know we call him “Milo” not “Yiannopoulos.” Probably never heard of him until his editor suggested the story.

This sums up the entire argument of SJWs.

White males are not allowed to have an opinion.

The ending is spot on but the “my feefee’s” crowd won’t listen.

It is to laugh. The Left CREATED PC tactics as weapons, and now it suggests abandoning them when their own turn against them? Hah. You've unleashed the whirlwind, fools. Your own followers will now rip each other to pieces with techniques they are far too stupid to understand. All they know is what you taught them - to relish in the bloodlust of destruction. And when they're done with each other, the pack will turn on its masters. Read what happened to Dr. Frankenstein.

Smug and arrogant, this leftist shows their real agenda within a paragraph of starting. Just another reason to defeat them and not get along with them.

Re: “Americans are increasingly identifying with their party, race, gender, or sexuality”
What alternate universe is the author living in? The Trump, Bernie, Cruz, Carson fans identify #1 with oppostion to the Corporatist establishment and #2 with ideology that has zero to do with identity politics.

Because we see a reality TV clown who has little to no understanding of the issues, has no respect for the Constitution, lies constantly, and changes positions on a dime.

Vote for the con man, but don't presume to call me un-American for opposing someone our Founding Fathers would have all detested, including Aaron Burr.

Ha! So YOU have been given the power to tell us what our Founding Fathers would think about Trump.

They would detest Trump?

That’s just hilarious.

For all you, or I or ANYONE knows, our FF would be saying “hear, hear” to Trump. They’d likely be cheering that we FINALLY have someone willing to take on the pantywaists in government, today.
