Paul Ryan On Stopping Trump's Muslim Ban: We'll Sue Him!
TalkingPointsMemo ^ | 6/17/2016 | Tierney Sneed

Posted on 06/17/2016 9:03:03 AM PDT by lodi90

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) has made clear he doesn't agree with a proposal put forward by Donald Trump -- whom Ryan has endorsed -- to ban Muslim immigration into the United States, but in an interview with the Huffington Post Thursday, Ryan floated taking a President Trump to court if he tried to implement such a ban or some of his other controversial proposals unilaterally.

“I would sue any president that exceeds his or her powers,” Ryan said in a back-and-forth about Trump's claims that he could implement a Muslim ban or build a Mexican border wall without congressional approval.

Ryan said he wasn't sure of the "legal question" of whether Trump could institute a Muslim ban on his own as president.

“That’s a legal question that there’s a good debate about,” he said, citing the 1952 Immigration and Nationality Act.

"On the broader question, are we going to exert our Article I powers and reclaim this Article I power no matter who the president is? Absolutely," Ryan said. He also said he discussed the limits of the executive power with Trump.

In the interview, Ryan said his endorsement of real estate mogul did not give Trump “a blank check,” and that he was still trying to achieve "real unity" between the presumptive nominee and his caucus.

Here's what you and many others don't understand, because you haven't taken the time to understand the WI 1st CD.

Racine and Waukesha counties are chock-full of CONSERVATIVE VOTERS. Remember the "lost ballots" in 2014, that's where they came from. This is where the conservative Republicans who work in the Milwaukee area prefer to live, outside the horrible Milwaukee school district. So yes, they love Ryan just like they LOVED Ted Cruz! (61% Cruz to 21% Trump in Waukesha, 51-32 in Racine, 48-34 in Walworth). These are the people who are keeping Paul Ryan in office. You want him out, talk to the conservatives in CD1!

Amen. I’d rather have a Dem Congress with Trump in the WH as he won’t hesitate to use the veto pen. And he’d negotiate until their buttocks were bleeding.

Give it back to the GOPe and get more of the same treachery.
At this point firing the RINOs is the more important task.

“I would sue any president that exceeds his or her powers.”

Yet this stupid bastard does nothing to stop the stupid bastard in the White House.

The repubs need to choose another speaker.

Not sure about his 800 number, but if you try to call him on regular line, you cannot talk to staff...you can only leave a comment and his voicemail box is full. Sheesh like he really cares to hear from constituents.

Nehlen for Congress!!!

Bringing suit is not an exercise of an Article I (Congress) power. It is submitting to the judgment of an Article III (court) power.

I do prefer, if he's contra-Trump, that Ryan do so openly and early. Better to get this out of the way before mid-October.

As for the party, it is a vessel holding some people. The vessel is okay, some of the people are okay. It's like any company that way. Might be beyond repair, too early to tell. Without Trump, it is garbage. I won;t vote for the Republicans floated in my state (Maine), and in fact, expend effort to have them defeated.

The real problem here is Ryan CONSTANTLY stirring the pot and green lighting the continued fragging of Trump. I saw Trump’s speech last night. It was conciliatory toward Cruz and others. And Ryan responds with a straight up FU.

It couldn’t be more clear now that the GOP prefers the Butcher of Benghazi to Trump. Put that fact in your pipe and smoke it.

Ryan’s puppet master’s are pulling his strings....he owned.

Wouldn't surprise me if Hillary's campaign cut him a check. If they did, at least his blathering would be explainable. What would be truly despicable is if he's throwing out these criticisms for free.

He didn't win in 2012
He didn't even win his own state.
All we ask is that he STFU. That's it. It's not hard. But, he can't even do that.

What a despicable bastard. I think I actually have more respect for Hillary than this slime ball.

Crouched underneath the desk in the Oval Office, keeping Obama... company.

They did sue Obama for failure to "take care" the laws are followed. That suit has percolated up to SCOTUS.

They delete the messages. He knows what average Americans think. But his pockets are bulging with muslim cash. Our entire government is like Ian Schrager’s trash bins of cash stashed in the basement of the old Studio 54.
