James Madison on the use of duties, restrictions and prohibitions to encourage domestic manufactures =>

________________________________________________________________________

It is a simple question under the Constitution of the U. S. whether "the power to regulate trade with foreign nations" as a distinct & substantive item in the enumerated powers, embraces the object of encouraging by duties restrictions and prohibitions the manufactures & products of the Country? And the affirmative must be inferred from the following considerations:

-snip-

2. The power has been understood and used by all commercial & manufacturing Nations as embracing the object of encouraging manufactures. It is believed that not a single exception can be named.

All of this Free Trade Crap Started with the Welfare State in 1964. The Coinage Act of 1965 is what really got the ball rolling, by 1971 we were thoroughly hosed and:

With the Brits coming for our gold and Japanese imports piling up, President Nixon in 1971 closed the gold window and imposed a 10 percent tariff on Japanese goods

Ever since the Admission of BANKRUPTCY on that fateful day, “Free Trade” is how they cover up the Financial Rape of the American People, and Reduce it’s people to a Nation of Debtors and Welfare Recipients, with the Money-Changers running the show.

Tariff’s are just another tax. Our problem is not that we are under-taxed. Amazing how many people claim to call themselves Conservative and fall for this protectionist racket. You want to balance the budget here’s an idea: cut spending , stop regulating us out of business and just get out of the way!

China is every bit the economic power that Japan was in 1980. My fear of the Chinese economy is the same as the fear I have of the Japan economy - which is zero fear. China will fade just like Japan did.

A tariff is a consumption tax. More tariffs and less income taxes is just what we need.

Funny how Greenspan argued against “welfare statists” and “coercive collectivists” - his descriptive terms in the chapters he submitted to Ayn Rands collection of essays in Capitalism: the Unknown Ideal from 1962. Power corrupts...

“Tariffs are a tax on consumers.”
................................

So?
ALL taxes are taxes upon consumers;

some also punish or reward selected entities along the way.

Tell me what the main, and nearly only way, the founders funded the government was?

Tariffs are how it was done sparky. And was done to simultaneously protect American industry, and to avoid taxing people’s incomes.

Free Trade will ONLY work if WE are a “Free Country”, that means Little to no regulations, including no environmental regs, no minimum wage, and none to little taxes.

We are not a a Truly “Free Country” so Free trade will only benefit any country we trade with that have more of the above conditions listed above than US.

See- China, no environmental regs, no min wage....

If we were a TRULY FREE COUNTRY we could easily use “Free Trade” to clobber other countries and be #1. but we are not, sadly...

they were destitute

the fact they had to rely on tariffs because there was no other source is now passe. The income tax is the current source of revenue because the obsolete tariffs no longer served.

tariffs now and those proposed by several here are vindictive in nature

American business is a fantastic extension of the American people and the desire of a minority of a minority to curtail it is a travesty of pure ignorance
