Donald Trump woke up Monday staring down the barrel of a terrible news week. A scathing New York Times report about his "unsettling" treatment of women was the talk of the morning shows and looked set to dominate the news cycle for days.
But by the time the morning shows were over, Trump had muddied the narrative. Now the Times, too, was on the defensive.
For the umpteenth time this campaign cycle, Trump seemingly succeeded in shifting scrutiny away from himself and back onto the media. He does so by capitalizing on any uncertainty in the reporting and then aggressively calling attention to it.
In this instance, Trump's opening was former girlfriend Rowanne Brewer Lane, who appeared on Fox News and accused the Times of spinning her words.
Trump was watching. He went to great lengths to alert others to the interview -- even calling CNN's "New Day" control room to personally make sure that the producers had seen it.

hoo-rah! yes!
It’s so unfair. After all, the media was relentless scrutinizing Obama in 2008. It’s just not fair. /s
Why do I think this will backfire on her...just like all her interviews.
And where's Michelle....what's her name...the reporter that was beaten by Corey???
Note to the Lamestream Media:
Unlike Barack Hussein Obama, Donald Trump is a tireless worker who never, ever quits until the job is done. Unlike the last bunch of worthless Republican presidential candidates, Donald Trump fights back.
It’s a whole new ballgame for you so-called “journalists.”
Trump is a master of media manipulation. This should have been apparent a few days before with the John Miller exchange. The media is extremely stupid.
” The media is extremely stupid.”
Dumber than dirt.
why doesn’t the NYT go back to interviewing people who got railroaded by the clintons in the 70s, 80s and 90s??
Exactly. At work we listen to talk radio morning on through the Rush hours.
ABC news is the top of the hour news break and till 10am were reporting the NYTIMES version even though it was an hour past the Fox interview.
By 11am it had change to a Trump narrative. I remarked to a co-worker; Wow that never happens.
Now we know Trump was the guiding force...lol
The drive by media gets shot back at. :-)
They’ve never had to deal with anyone like Trump before. To quote G. Gordon Liddy, “In a battle of wits, you are unarmed”.
Check out the facial expressions of that Meghan NYT woman. Like ‘we got caught distorting’ ..
The fact that the Times has been so outclassed by Donald Trump that they would stoop to the tactic that they stooped to, confirms the picture I painted of the Times in my novel, Return Of The Cods, in which the Times plays the major actual antagonist to a young Virginia Conservative, running for the U.S. Senate. (Or how else can anyone really spin their tactics or stpidity?)
Not sure where Miss Fields is. I hope for her sake she will do some growing up and humble owning up before she comes back in the public spotlight.
The nyt was on a fool’s errand from the start.
It covered for the clintons after one if bill’s employees came forward and sued for workplace harassment.
Trump did not summon a low level employee to his hotel room, expose his privates , and request that she “kiss it”.
That was Bill Clinton who did that.
He certainly had help from Morning Joe this morning. They spent the whole show dissing the Times.
Donny wanted to get into the Epstein/Bill Clinton scandal but Mika’s phony maidenly blushes stopped him.
Yep, and then he got Dr. Carson to “leak” some VP names to get another free news cycle! He loves screwing with the “dishonest media”...
If you are in the right, have nothing to hide, and others (ie. NY Times) are lying or spinning badly — then its relatively easy to embarrass them.
Trump especially seems to enjoy making media clowns look bad and he’s good at it also.
And predictable, which makes this easy for Trump.
