Ex-London Mayor Boris Johnson compares the EU to Hitler

Ex-London Mayor Boris Johnson has compared the European Union’s aims to those of Adolf Hitler, arguing that the 28-nation bloc is creating a superstate that mirrors the attempt of the Nazi leader to dominate the European continent.

Johnson, the most prominent political figure arguing that Britain should leave the EU, says the past 2,000 years of European history have been dominated by doomed attempts to unify the continent and recreate the Romans’ golden age.

“Napoleon, Hitler, various people tried this out, and it ends tragically. The EU is an attempt to do this by different methods,” he was quoted by The Sunday Telegraph as saying. “But fundamentally, what is lacking is the eternal problem, which is that there is no underlying loyalty to the idea of Europe. There is no single authority that anybody respects or understands. That is causing this massive democratic void.” …

I admit I know not much about London politics or political figures but I think this guy sees exactly what is going on in Europe. Best advice I can give the Brits: flood the chunnel.

So, Napoleon is respectable but Hitler is not?

The citing of these two precedents places the EU in a different light. The means become suspect, clouding the ends.

It would seem the current culprit is a consensus of Social Democrats
rather than the undefined mass mind described by Tolstoy in War and Peace.

The concept is interesting and should not be rejected out of hand

Well, if Social Democrats, don’t forget that Lenin’s CPSU started as the Social Democratic Labor Party of Russia.

In other words he is saying that the EU is acting like Barack Obama.

Heavy handed and tyrannical.

Could be a chicken-egg conundrum there, given what Obama said back in 2009.

I said several years past that Hitler’s mistake was using tanks instead of banks to conquer Europe.

I’d be more inclined to say Stalin (or Mao) than Hitler.

Best advice I can give the Brits: flood the chunnel.

Funny you should mention that.

I recall a story back when the UK was taking bids on building the chunnel, huge, massive bids in the billions, but the low bid was from a pair of Irish construction lads, the O'Malley Brothers. They bid the equivalent of $300,000 for the whole job.

The O'Malleys were called in to explain how they proposed to build the chunnel for such a low bid. Ian O'Malley smiled and explained "it's easy, me brother will sail over to the French side, I'll stay here on British soil, and we'll both start digging with these brand new shovels we got, and we'll meet in the middle under the channel, job completed!!"

The inevitable question: "that sounds all well and good, but what if perchance you and your brother happen to MISS each other under the channel?"

Ian O'Malley beams and says "ahhh our misfortune is your gain, you'll get TWO tunnels for the price of one!"

So, it’s ok for Boris to ‘build a wall’ against Europe but not ok for The Donald.

They sound like the Irish builder on Fawlty Tower who always said “Ah, Mr. Fawlty, if God wanted us to worry, he’d give us something to worry about!”

Or the Godwin equivalent for Napoleon. If there is one.

It was in fact the plan of Hitler’s economic advisors to unite Europe under a common currency and common market, under the aegis of Germany, of course. So Boris is just reminding the UK of that.

He’s right. Its really a push towards the very old lord/serf feudal model and its being accomplished on two fronts one economically through the consolidation of wealth upward and the other through consolidation of power in federal bureaucracies. The result is the same as if the world was invaded by Germany and subdued the only difference with bodies like the EU and the UN the subduing occurred without a shot. We have the same problem here in the US with the federal power far exceeding its constitutional limits whereas the key problem that Europe has is that in many cases it didn’t have any real limits at all to the reach of EU power. so the bureaucrats in Brussels don’t even have to pretend to conform to a dead constitution as ours do. They of course are pretending less and less.

We have seen now the result of federal central governments in that they are doomed to regress to the feudal model. You can not have liberty married to socialism and not end up with a dependent doe eye sheepdom.
