Of all the problems besetting Los Angeles, the most fundamental is this: It doesn't have much of a middle class.

Damn straight and they are sucking the private sector dry.
First things first... Build the wall and make Mexico pay for it!
You don’t rebuild it. This is as designed. This way you have wealthy and poor and the wealthy and well connected lord over the poor who are kept poor, ignorant and docile, so that they will vote for the well connected. Except for the voting part, that system worked well in France, didn’t it?
Just leading the way. When the 1% get their way, all of America will look like that - and like pre-revolutionary Russia. I do have some regrets that I am unlikely to live long enough to see the ruling class standing in front of a wall.
We need a “look for the right to work” label program.
Rebuild it?? What the hell is he talking about? We spent the last 40 years actively trying to DESTROY the Middle Class, why in the hell would anyone want to rebuild it?

It can’t be fixed. The middle-class have been leaving for decades due to the liberal/socialist/racist policies of the Los Angeles City Council and many Mayors. It’s long been known as “white flight”. Oops, a micro-aggression.
Yeah, I could not believe his conclusion. What an idiot.
California by law was forced to tell the truth about pension debt which is mostly unfunded.
Pension debt is 250 BILLION DOLLARS.
With LA populated now by the Third World and the city and state controlled by some of the most leftist Democrats in the nation you can forget restoring a middle class there Mr. Myerson.
Having lived in communist and socialist countries - its an iron rule I have developed.
The bigger the government, the more redistributionist or activist it is, the more it puts in place systems that are not only inefficient, but creates vast opportunities for rent-seeking and capture by those connected to government. Those places with the largest governments are ALWAYS those that are most unequal.
The union pension time bomb is starting to explode across the country.
You get Government out of the way of people who understand reality; who instinctively understand that one needs to work & save a portion of the fruits of one's labor; to build for an improving future. That is how you allow a potential Middle Class to create itself.
The only collective "planning" should be to simply recognize that individuals striving with what talents they have to provide services that have an inherent value, will always out-perform those who allow themselves to be programmed by crack-pots sitting around conference tables in bureaucratic enclaves, trying to prove that the fancy-driven theories they learned in college really work.
(Hint, they don't because of the easily comprehended fact that competent people do a better job programming themselves, than submitting to manipulation by theorists, sitting around conference tables.)
When it explodes in the private sector it goes away, but for government workers we are often forced to have our taxes raised to pay for what I consider a criminal act.
Start with a wall.
I thought illegal aliens were supposed to cure all economic problems. Doesn’t LA have any of them?
Harold should be fired. He missed so many important points.
He said increasing minimum wage only raises wages to $30k. But “we know” that this increase also increases middle class wages and doesn’t hurt anyone (except maybe those disgusting rich business owners who won’t leave the city no matter how much they threaten).
He only mentioned increasing the sales tax. But “we know” that increasing taxes on the rich and corporations is good for everyone. And when taxes are raised and the city can afford to make it a better place to live that attracts workers which attracts jobs.
He didn’t mention that increasing regulations makes the city a better place to live and will therefore attract jobs.
And, I’m not sure exactly how, but I know he could have come up with a reason to focus on green energy and blame the problem on racism.
Maybe all the competent editorialists in LA have left along with the rest of the middle class and Harold is all that’s left for the times.
Start hanging Democrats. New job opportunities for morticians and grave diggers.
