You’re right; any article like this could as easily been written about my home state of NJ or neighboring NY, or Illinois. It isn’t just people fleeing because they don’t want the high taxes; they are fleeing because they have to follow the EMPLOYERS FLEEING HIGH TAXES.
In these areas there are Welfarians (who contribute nothing but consume heavily from the public teat), the government worker caste (who pay taxes in return for much higher salaries and better benefits than most people paying them, and the “hosts” (companies and individuals bled dry by the first and second groups). How long can the third group stay around?

Collusion? Conflict of interest? Kick-backs? Like anything govt, it’s only those ‘outside’ that must abide....and support.
I’m sure ANYONE would love to sit with their cohorts discussing pay/bennies that a 3rd party is FORCED to pay with no input.

Young people that have the means to buy a home are much more aware today of how the government (or just economics) can destroy their property value; most won’t risk thirty years of mortgage payments (and here in NJ high property tax payments) just to end up living in a Third World toilet five years after closing on the loan...
This story illustrates how when it explodes in the public sector the middle class (and their employers) go away...
Same thing happened in SF, and most other metropolises around the country.
Let liberals run a city long enough and the middle class will leave, or be whittled down to poverty levels.
Eventually you will have the rich and the poor. Welcome back to the feudal years, before capitalism gave men a chance to move up in class, which created the middle class.
Now with the attack on capitalism, the middle class is disappearing and in time all we will have left is the rich and the poor again.
Welcome to the dark ages of the past, which is our future if we don’t stop the left.

That fact that the author can even ask this question is the problem. Governments don’t “build” middle classes. They don’t “create” jobs.
They can, however, destroy a class or destroy jobs.

I'd rather wall it off and leave them to their own devices than have to provide for an undereducated working class and put up with another set of me-first elites.
Another reason to insist upon TERM LIMITS. Don't let them stay long enough to become "insiders".
