Did you see the author's prescription for solving this problem? Yup, higher taxes, more government spending.

The most plausible immediate hope for creating such jobs is a ballot measure being put together for November's election that would raise the county sales tax by a half-cent, which would generate $120 billion over the next 40 years for an ambitious program of rail and highway projects.

What is up with California liberals and their love of trains? It’s one of their weirder hobby horses, and I don’t think that their idols Marx or Keynes ever talked about trains at all.

On the bright side most of the upper percent of L.A. is in the entertainment industry and are thus liberals. So I say YES. Tax them to death.

Um, I know! Invite in more unskilled illegal immigrants who will mostly live on the dole and those who work will drive down wages, and then raise taxes so that only the very rich or the very subsidized can afford to live there!

“How do we rebuild it?”

That fact that the author can even ask this question is the problem. Governments don’t “build” middle classes. They don’t “create” jobs.

They can, however, destroy a class or destroy jobs.

check his bio - an avowed socialist. I don’t understand why he is not happy. This is what socialism gets you.
