Candidate Donald Trump scored what appears to be an ‘own goal’ against his candidacy earlier this evening when he told supporters at a campaign rally in West Virginia not to vote for him.
Now what I want you to do is save your vote, Trump told the crowd in Charleston, West Virginia. You know, you dont have to vote anymore. Save your vote for the general election, OK? Forget this one, the primary is gone. (link)
Immediately social media erupted with people trying to figure out what’s going on. Two hours later the confusion has only amplified exponentially as no-one associated with the Trump campaign is trying to clear up the mixed-messaging.
The West Virginia offices of the campaign are in a stunned state of panic and internal confusion. No up-stream national Trump campaign officials are making any efforts to clarify the matter, and the campaign workers in West Virginia are unable to explain what’s going on.
Do West Virginians need to vote next Tuesday?
Why would Donald Trump tell mountaineers to stay home?
No-one is quite sure?
There are instructions on the Trump Website including a voter aid card (pictured below) outlining who to vote for.
However, with the candidate announcing to a massive (28,000) West Virginia audience their votes are no longer needed, there is understandable confusion.
This type of horrible messaging, and even worse communications, does not make the Trump organizational camp look good or capable of running a national campaign. It certainly feeds into a media narrative of ineptitude on the vary basics of campaign 101.
Do voters need to vote?
Was this a subliminal message to tell voters to support Bernie Sanders?
What the heck was Donald Trump talking about?
…Stay tuned, I guess…
Update 11:19pm: Donald Trump Tweets:
Looks like West Virginia does need to vote next Tuesday after all.

No lawyer here.
Matter of fact, I’ve posted the slate that the Trump campaign put out for WV on at least 4 occassions here.
Trump’s lack of situational awareness when he made those remarks only gives bullets to the enemy.

Any mis-speaks by Trump in coal country can easily wiped away if he brings up the corruption CO-presidential action of Hill and Bill of That Trillion-Dollar Ripoff— Clinton’s Utah Coal Deal.

Trump still needs Convention approval for his nomination.
He’ll get his message straighten out.

Not my job. I retired in ‘99.
Matter of fact, I don’t even have a dog in this race. No kids, no wife, no job and considering my advanced age and declining health, doubt I’ll see the next pres. election.
Add to that the fact that I am not now, nor have I EVER BEEN a member of ANY political (criminal) party, on Tues. I will be voting ONLY for judges and magistrate.

Confused the heck out of me, for sure.

I am in the same boat except I hate waste..... : (
....and I am much younger than you (retired early) meaning I'll have to put up with the criminal parties a bit longer... ; (
I do hope you are feeling OK? And if God willing, I hope you will have many more happy and feeling OK days ahead. Do take care.

I would hope he gets the votes in the primary since he is the only one running. But it’s pretty clear he hasn’t a clue how the system works.
So, how about that Soros guy running trumps fundraising? Awesome huh?

Actually, Cruz quit before he lost.
Otherwise, he would still be trying to win. It ain’t over, but Cruz quit.

it’s pretty clear he hasn’t a clue how the system works Don't you remember hearing that Donald had never voted in a Primary before?
I just remembered that tidbit.
It all makes sense to me now.

Maybe he’ll pardon you from being a terminal dipstick. Yeah right after he gets back from his meeting with Ryan that he has scheduled or maybe you have not heard.
Typical politicians. Make big talk about each other, meet with each other and then the outcome is screw We the People.
Something you do not understand, dipshiite.

if he’s stupid, what does that say about the rest of the party? It says nothing about the "party".
It says that the American voter is a cultist media driven voter that is driven by reality TV show stardom than real conservative values.
Nothing about the "party".

I think he screwed up.
Right after the Rally a Tweet (I believe) came out saying thanks for attending the Rally and Vote next Tuesday.
Rookie Politician Mistake. Don’t think it will make any difference though. He will still take WV.

What it says is that the American people are so fed up with politics as usual that a roll of the dice on a complete wildcard is vastly preferable to more of the same.
This is the American people attempting to reassert control over our own government from an oligarchy that has completely cut us out from having any real input on policy.

It's great that we finally have a candidate who you think doesn't have a clue. You know, that neophyte candidate who beat ALL of the other seasoned politicians when they apparently left their "clue" traits at home. I'm sick and tired of pulling the lever for another phony GOP politician, who we're always told is the best conservative candidate available. You know, one of those establishment politician types who apparently can't even stop the new kid on the block.
Trump is playing his own game, a game entirely unfamiliar to all of the politicians, establishment elites, talking heads, political analysts and the media. None of them have figured this guy out yet and will go into the general election campaign trying to fit him into the same square holes that they tried to jam Trump into, in the primaries.
You mock Trump but he won. Your guy, whoever that was, is not the nominee, is he/she? Time to rally behind the guy that's going to take Hillary in a blowout this fall.

Trumps lack of situational awareness when he made those remarks only gives bullets to the enemy.
This may be his downfall(and ours)
His total lack of political awareness is shocking! Doesn't support(or care) about "downticket" races on the West Virginia ballot?
I appreciate Trump's message about immigration, bring back American jobs and getting the economy back on it's feet.
However, Ronald Reagan he is not.
Beating Hillary isn't the end all that lots of assumed conservatives here have forgotten or is no longer important.
We whined about Bush I and Bush II for not being conservative enough yet celebrate with glee the nomination of, at best, an Rockefeller Republican..
For those who don't know what that is, that't a LIBERAL Republican..
The ones Reagan fought as strongly as any liberal Democrat.
I hope I'm wrong.

Rookie Politician Mistake.
I hope Trump's a quick learner because the Democrats won't be giving any "Mulligans".
I'm sure the other office party candidates on the ballot appreciate his support and not needing any more votes, either.
