Paul Ryan Says He Cannot Support Donald Trump for Now
New York Times ^ | May 5, 2016 | JENNIFER STEINHAUER

Speaker Paul D. Ryan, the nation’s highest-ranking elected Republican, said Thursday he was “not ready” to endorse Donald J. Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee.

Mr. Ryan, who is also chairman of the Republican National Convention, has repeatedly said he would support his party’s nominee. But he has carved out some terrain to differentiate himself, by insisting that House Republicans write their own policy agenda this year and by giving speeches that at times criticized Mr. Trump’s views. Mr. Ryan said Republicans needed a “standard-bearer” who embodied the party’s standards.

“I don’t want to underplay what he accomplished,” Mr. Ryan said about Mr. Trump. But he added, “We hope that our nominee aspires to be Lincoln and Reaganesque,” someone who “appeals to a vast majority of Americans.”

“I think conservatives want to know does he share our values and our principles,” he said. “There’s a lot of questions conservatives are going to want answers to.”

His comments Thursday differed from other Republican lawmakers this week who have offered tempered support for Mr. Trump.

“I have committed to supporting the nominee chosen by Republican voters, and Donald Trump, the presumptive nominee, is now on the verge of clinching that nomination,” Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the majority leader, said in a statement this week.

Many Republicans have been expecting Mr. Ryan to spend his time this summer and fall shoring up vulnerable House Republicans, particularly those running in districts where Mr. Trump is unpopular, rather than stumping for the nominee.

Mr. Ryan has at times taken direct shots at Mr. Trump. After Mr. Trump proposed a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States, Mr. Ryan strongly disagreed. “This is not conservatism,” Mr. Ryan said in December.

As of late, the GOP has stood for losing Presidential elections. I, for one, am tired of it.

Mr. Ryan, listen up: Trump is our guy. You might not like him, but that does not matter. Winning is what matters. Nothing changes unless we win the election this time.

Trump will beat Clinton, soundly, in the general.

Now, quit being a sore loser. Get on the train. We are going to win this time. We can't take another loss.

Ryan is going to be the Chairman of the Republic national convention. He has just disqualified himself and should be removed. Is there any way for the convention to replace this Quisling, I wonder?

It could be a very interesting convention.

Ryan still has time to step down as convention chairman or to get behind Trump.

Efforts to purge him will probably have a bad effect on Trump's efforts to win over Republicans from the elected political Establishment.

From what I can dimly remember, though, the office of convention chairman may be a largely ceremonial one.

There's the permanent chair, who kicks off the convention, but it's usually some temporary chair who's on the podium most of the time (I think) presiding over the hall.

If Ryan has to give a speech, it could be awkward if he doesn't back the expected nominee.

Hmmmmm...I have a serious disconnect with the statement above when one considers the previous GOP supported candidates:

GHW Bush
Bob Dole
GW Bush
John Mccain
Mitt Romney
Relegate them to the dustbin of history.

This is a TOTAL crock.

so....IT'S STILL ON! It's still on. Trump vs Cruz, Ryan, Romney, etc.

There are not THREE choices:

1. TRUMP

2. MAYBE TRUMP

3. NEVERTRUMP

Trump really makes the right sort of enemies. If Trump was a Democrat Ryan would be slobbering all him to endorse him.

Ryan needs to be Cantorized like his buddy Eric and thrown out of office for siding with fraudulently documented foreigners and their employers against the citizens and the rule of law.

It’s an absolute disgrace that the senior ‘leaders’ in the Republican party have decided to abandon their nominee, the man that voters in their party want as president. A real chance to win the White House with a principled patriot and they stay home and sulk.

I hope they enjoy the next eight years of Hillary Clinton and her Marxist gang of thieves and destroyers. At least they’ll get to keep many of their perks and privileges while the country disintegrates.

“...Trump is not the sole arbiter of what the Republican party stands for. ...”

Neither are Republicans anymore, apparently.

Most of them just seem like the less-communist branch of the democrat party these days.

Ryan is still a Judas to all on the right and needs to be stripped of all power.

Ryan was elected to his seat and was elected speaker by other elected Republicans. Trump is not the sole arbiter of what the Republican party stands for.

Little Paulie had better have a care around his Daddy Trump.

Hoosier Daddy, Paulie?

That's right - TRUMP'S your Daddy.
