Paul Ryan Says He Cannot Support Donald Trump for Now
New York Times ^ | May 5, 2016 | JENNIFER STEINHAUER

Speaker Paul D. Ryan, the nation’s highest-ranking elected Republican, said Thursday he was “not ready” to endorse Donald J. Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee.

Mr. Ryan, who is also chairman of the Republican National Convention, has repeatedly said he would support his party’s nominee. But he has carved out some terrain to differentiate himself, by insisting that House Republicans write their own policy agenda this year and by giving speeches that at times criticized Mr. Trump’s views. Mr. Ryan said Republicans needed a “standard-bearer” who embodied the party’s standards.

“I don’t want to underplay what he accomplished,” Mr. Ryan said about Mr. Trump. But he added, “We hope that our nominee aspires to be Lincoln and Reaganesque,” someone who “appeals to a vast majority of Americans.”

“I think conservatives want to know does he share our values and our principles,” he said. “There’s a lot of questions conservatives are going to want answers to.”

His comments Thursday differed from other Republican lawmakers this week who have offered tempered support for Mr. Trump.

“I have committed to supporting the nominee chosen by Republican voters, and Donald Trump, the presumptive nominee, is now on the verge of clinching that nomination,” Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the majority leader, said in a statement this week.

Many Republicans have been expecting Mr. Ryan to spend his time this summer and fall shoring up vulnerable House Republicans, particularly those running in districts where Mr. Trump is unpopular, rather than stumping for the nominee.

Mr. Ryan has at times taken direct shots at Mr. Trump. After Mr. Trump proposed a temporary ban on Muslims entering the United States, Mr. Ryan strongly disagreed. “This is not conservatism,” Mr. Ryan said in December.

Good - it is nice to know who the enemy is. Ryan’s opposition is not going to hurt Trump. But it may hurt Ryan - I will be donating to his primary opponent and I hope all Freepers do.

Well, there goes the so-called 'Pledge' to support the eventual nominee.

If Trump is REALLY a closet Democrat the Rats will hate him just like they hate Bush. Just wait for the Democrat minority to initiate impeachment proceedings. With the right VP the Pubics can PULL THE TRIGGER.

Rather than an Lying establishment sellout and religious nut like Cruz. Everyone in Congress and the Senate would be voting for Hillary if he weren’t so inept at getting votes.
The guy caved in to TPP,TPA, BLM and SOROS because he’s CINO.
Enjoy your conservative standard bearer Ryan while we win this election.

you are right, Trump is a closet Democrat. He has already caved on minimum wage (took 1 day), let’s see what is next.
***************************************************

Well, he just renounced his own tax plan. Does that count?

Only morons miss the facts entirely and elect to take up only the position the media hands them— the truncated version and misrepresentation of what TRUMP actually said.

Obviously you missed the LIVE interview and chose instead door Number 2, with the media version sliced and diced.

LOLOL!!!

Look for Paul Ryan to support Ben Sasse as a third party spoiler.

The main issue is AMNESTY.

Every Democrat and Rino office holder (of which Ryan is a proud member) I know are determined to force Amnesty down our throats.

This issue alone disqualifies your statement that Trump is a “closet Democrat”.

Not true

Even Rush was fooled by that until he looked closer at what was actually said and corrected his previous comments.

>>Mr. Ryan said about Mr. Trump. But he added, “We hope that our nominee aspires to be Lincoln and Reaganesque,” someone who “appeals to a vast majority of Americans.”

Translated from RINO-speak, that means:

Started a bloody Civil War.

Believes in the supply-side economics that has caused worker paychecks to stagnate for over a decade (yes, they worked once but that was a long time ago before globalization got so easy).

Appeals to weak-kneed RINOs, liberal women, illegal labor, and muslims.

Ryan had no problem supporting Romney though! What a two-faced POS.

Primary him just like Cantor!

Every decision a congresscritter makes starts with and ends with how it impacts his reelection. Everything else is subordinate to that one consideration. Ryan is reflecting that now insofar as his horde of critters are fluttering about now as to whether Trump helps or hinders their chance for reelection.

“Ryan was elected to his seat and was elected speaker by other elected Republicans. Trump is not the sole arbiter of what the Republican party stands for.”

So, you support Ryan’s pro-Hillary stance,then?

The time for that has passed on FR.

JimRob today declared FR to officially be a pro-Trump website.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3427849/posts

“we’re all winners as long as we continue placing our faith and trust in God Almighty and redouble our efforts to defend America, Constitution and Liberty for ourselves and our POSTERITY by voting for Trump over the godless America-hating Marxist Hildabeast (or the burn) in November!

Free Republic, today, is officially calling for an end to the primary hostilities and is asking for all participants to disengage from all primary flamewars and grudge matches. Time to let lost battles go and focus on doing our very best to win the great patriotic battle for freedom ahead.

All who wish to help us in a direct positive way, ie, support and vote for Trump to defend America from the godless Marxist/socialist/lefist/collectivist totalitarians are welcome to join or rejoin us.

But the primary season flamewars are over and must end.

The time for choosing is here.

Jim Robinson”

“Actually in 1976 when Reagan lost to Ford at the convention, he never endorsed Ford.”

I recall that Reagan reluctantly came down to the main stage to join Ford after the final vote. Reagan then gave a stirring, impromptu speech that never mentioned Ford.
