Mocking Critics, Donald Trump Says He Can Win Without Republican Unity
New York Times ^ | April 29, 2016 | JONATHAN MARTIN and ADAM NAGOURNEY

BURLINGAME, Calif. — Donald J. Trump got a taste on Friday of what his next month of campaigning in California could be like. He was forced to exit his motorcade and walk through a field, climbing an embankment with Secret Service agents helping him, to avoid angry demonstrators on the street.

“We went under a fence and through a fence, and oh, boy, it felt like I was crossing the border, actually,” Mr. Trump said when he finally made it to a ballroom to speak at California’s Republican Party convention.

For the next 25 minutes, though, Mr. Trump spoke little of California or its June 7 primary. Rather, he wrestled with whether he wanted to begin healing the fractured party he was seeking to lead. Mr. Trump, the Republican front-runner in the presidential race, mocked his conservative critics and his current and former rivals as dumb, “disgusting” and losers. He claimed at least twice that he could win even if the party did not come together. And with some conservatives still uneasy about his beliefs, he breezily dismissed questions about his principles.

“Folks, I’m a conservative, but at this point, who cares? We got to straighten out the country,” he said at a subdued luncheon of party activists who seemed more curious about seeing a celebrity than enthusiastic about their potential presidential nominee.

During the same speech, though, he called for party unity to defeat Hillary Clinton, the likely Democratic standard-bearer.

Mr. Trump’s remarks offered a vivid illustration of the current state of his campaign: As he edges closer to the nomination, he is under pressure to curb his hard-edged language and exude a more statesmanlike demeanor. But the continuing attacks from other Republicans plainly rankle him, and he appears to have little appetite to make peace with his critics.

All I’ve seen is the same old tired attacks on Trump coming from Cruz, his supporters, Kasich, the Bushies, the neo-con artists, the open borders crowd, Limbaugh, Levin, on and on and on. Where are the ones telling people to unify around Trump and who are they?

I hate it that these flaming globalists call themselves “conservatives.” They are far from it.

He’s going to take down a lot of anti-establishment conservatives just because they happen to hold office and it suits him to indiscriminately attack anyone who holds office with an R behind their name. Being a wrecking ball is not a platform. It is an attitude. I have spent years trying to help those guys into our state legislature and we have had some success.

He may well win the presidency. But he will have to govern with a much less conservative Congress and we will have to live in the states with far more liberal state legislatures if he doesn’t learn to distinguish between tea party R’s and John Boehner.

But Trump is following all the rules as laid down.

You anti-Trumpists need to get over yourselves and accept the results.

Republicans who supported other candidates in the primaries are told that they should unify behind Trump. That will not happen if he continues to disrespect them and their candidates.

This article is almost an entire fabrication that only a deranged, ignorant Cruzbot or RINO could believe.

“I heard this. Apparently Trump is really running as a third, perhaps more reasonable candidate, in the Democrat party.”

Except he didn’t run as a Democrat. He certainly had the money to do so. If he’s sooo antithetical to the ideology of right-of-center voters, why is he demolishing the vast majority of “conservatives” and “Republicans” in the primary? Are you really gonna argue that the political Right just doesn’t understand itself or - better yet - understand its leadership?

"Republicans who supported other candidates in the primaries are told that they should unify behind Trump. That will not happen if he continues to disrespect them and their candidates. "

The other candidates are the problem. The GOPe is the problem. Trump recognizes the problem, and is correct in telling the problem, to stuff their vote.

“subdued luncheon of party activists”

You want to see subdued? Watch Cruz’s speech today at the convention. The only people clapping were his campaign workers. I was very surprised at the lack of enthusiasm they showed for him.

Do you have an internal memo you’re quoting?

“Do you have an internal memo you’re quoting?”

Yes. I can’t give detail on it. But if Trump doesn’t start distinguishing between R-Hacks and the conservative tea party folks we have been laboring to put into office here in CO, he’s going to lose a bunch of them.

This is especially true in CO where Trump’s attacks have been nasty and dishonest. People voted, assemblies were held, and Trump didn’t even bother to show up to speak at the assembly. He didn’t have much support to begin with and then he got outworked by Cruz. So he lost. It’s that simple. What pisses us off here in CO is when the Donald runs around saying it was rigged. He’s calling a lot of tea party folks who have just moved into positions of party power dishonest. I know them and they aren’t.

Trump has a whole lot of work and public humble pie to eat to have any chance of getting the support of the Colorado liberty movement folks or the tea parties. We have a GOP E here and they’ll get on board fine. But they are whores and won’t be much help for Trump in a year where everyone hates them. But you don’t call my friends liars and dishonest when you really have no idea what you’re talking about and have much hope for my support and organizational skills until you apologize for trying to ruin our conservative/tea party movement here.

And yes, I’m someone who can turn the grassroots on or off to a candidate. I can make sure a candidate doesn’t see any of my activists out walking, calling, or contributing for him.

I don’t speak alone. The rest of the tea party leaders in the state are appalled at Trump’s nasty and dishonest attacks on them.

I’ll vote for him—so I’m one of the easier going guys in that regard. But voting personally is different than spending three months organizing my people to turn out the vote for a man who didn’t bother to find out what actually went on before he lied about us and, unambiguously hurt the conservative movement in Colorado a lot.

Trump made a major mistake blaming his loss in Colorado on anyone but his own crappy campaign here. If he wants to win Colorado, he has some serious fence-mending to do. Maybe it made him feel better at the time to rationalize his loss. But I don’t give a $hit about his feelings when he lies about my friends.

All politics is local. And Trump blew it big time in Colorado. Colorado is a likely state he has to win.

It’s possible for him to unify the party around him. But his first instinct needs to be to do the smart thing, not the nasty thing. (PS He can be as nasty to HRC as he wants). I’m talking about the way he treats people who are potential supporters.

We had a few fake Tea Party groups in Nevada freaking out over every little thing.

I’m an insignificant gnat with the opinion those ‘concerned’ types can shove it where the sun don’t shine.

“I’m an insignificant gnat with the opinion those ‘concerned’ types can shove it where the sun don’t shine.”

That is, of course, your call. But don’t call me “concerned.” I’m pissed off. Come July, do we push our resources out to save the anti-establishment conservatives in CO from the mess Trump has made here or do we deploy some of them to help elect Trump president. That depends on Trump helping to fix what he has broken. Resources are limited.

“I hope someone on his team sees this then and gets in contact with you”

His senior campaign management has already come in and mau-mau’ed the State party officials. “As soon as the nomination is locked in, we’ll be the party’s best friend.” But in the meantime, his minions continue their assault on the conservative movement here in Colorado. I think the assault has it’s own momentum.

And, without going into details, State party leadership (in combination with the Denver Chamber of Commerce and other like-minded establishment money) is already using Trump’s muddy boots assault on conservatives here in the state to reset some infrastructure to make sure that conservatives will have a much harder time winning primaries in CO. Making nice with the GOP-E here in CO is not the same as undoing the damage he has done to conservatives.
