National Review ^ | April 26, 2016 | Rich Lowry

During an era of headline-grabbing advances in medicine, the United States is experiencing a health cataclysm. The latest straw in the wind is last week’s report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showing that life expectancy for white women declined slightly from 2013 to 2014.

It is not just the working class. It is also the middle class. It is also the family. It is also cities, towns and neighborhoods.

America is systematically and deliberately being destroyed.

The self described intellectuals are just beginning to become aware of it.

The politicians are mostly ignorant of the fact or don't care.

Obama is destroying America. Our once great country is now deeply in debt and unable to compete.

Lot of people sitting on their asses doing nothing. That is part of the problem. Eating crap food isn’t helping either.

I was in France for ten days.

I only saw one fat person I thought was French.

I saw several overweight people in the Louvre, all spoke English except a German.

Even in Britain, there are very few overweight people. I haven’t seen an obese person in all of Europe and I’ve been here over three weeks.

Soda tends to be expensive here.

Smoking is more common in France from what I saw.

Living paycheck to paycheck, or retirement check to retirement check, budgeting every expenditure, might have something to do with it. Crummy to no interest rates in savings and CD’s is a blow to savers, who are punished. No COLA during three years of Obama’s presidency for federal and posted retirees and SS recipients while the government showers welfare on illegal immigrants and brings in Syrian refugees might engender feelings of unfairness among good American citizens of any age. The horror show will continue with a Clinton presidency.

The heroin epidemic is a byproduct of the destruction of the working and middle ciasses!

“The slide in the wrong direction was driven by drug and alcohol poisoning, chronic liver diseases, and suicide ..”

We have a friend who is the head of HR at the large regional hospital here. He told us that about half of the applicants for jobs at the hospital don’t make it past the initial drug screen or criminal background check.

This is why NR supports Cruz - working to eliminate the white working class and middle class all together.

When I was in Ireland years ago I noticed the same things you are seeing. What struck me is how sedentary we are in the USA. I’ve never lived in old cities in the US, but the metro area in which I lived at the time was not made for pedestrians. We drove every where. Walking to the fruit and veg shop, the bakery, the market etc. in Ireland was a novel experience for me. Everywhere I shopped at home was off a freeway.

Now that I am in a rural area it’s still more driving than walking. The closest grocery store is 20 miles away.

Their cities and towns were developed long before the automobile and the ease of walking everywhere reflects that. The US is also much more vast-wide open spaces that must be traveled in a vehicle. Perhaps the prevalence of moving more and sitting less is why we see fewer obese people there.

Dude. Ditch the ‘American’ bit and learn how to be a Euro. It will suck to be us very soon.

“I only saw one fat person I thought was French.”

France is one of the countries with highest consumption of saturated fat.

“The politicians are mostly ignorant of the fact or don’t care.”

I think it’s the latter.

I also think that the concept of personal discipline has completely fallen off the radar. When I was in school they tried to combat the problem with ideas like this.

“This is why NR supports Cruz - working to eliminate the white working class and middle class all together.”

Wasn’t it NR’s Kevin Williamson who wrote an article about how the middle class lays about smoking crack and master debating?
Eff him and the pony he and Rich Lowrey rod in on. NR is a foundation stone in the GOP-e that doesn’t give a rat’s azz about people who raise a sweat.

The French also smoke. Tends to keep the women slim. I once saw Catherine Deneuve in Paris dragging on a coffin nail.

Obesity in Great Britain is pretty bad. I can’t think of one facebook friend from England that I have who isn’t either fat or getting there.

The working-class in this country gets nothing but contempt from places like the National Review. Don’t think they aren’t aware of it - even tangentially. That and the fact that they can’t get jobs is also shortening their lives.
