PETER HITCHENS: America isn't our special friend. It ruined our Navy, Empire and future
dailymail.com ^ | 4/24/2016 | Peter Hitchens

Now will we grasp that the United States is not our friend, but a foreign country whose interests are often different from ours?

President Obama's blatant intervention in our internal affairs is not a sudden breach of a soppy 'special relationship'. The USA's only real special relationship is with Saudi Arabia, a 70-year old hard pact of oil, money and power, welded together with such cynicism it out to make up gasp.

Barack Obama's open desire for us to stay inside the EU is by no means the first or worst example of White House meddling here in these islands. Bill Clinton forced us to cave to the Provisional IRA in 1998 and his successor, George W. Bush, continued the policy by making us to Sinn Fein's bidding afterwards.

Washington came close to scuppering our recapture of the Falklands in 1982. And with the current state of our Armed Forces, which can nowadays do nothing without American support, I often wonder how the White House and the Pentagon would behave if Argentina once again seized Port Stanley.

If anyone thinks Hillary Clinton is a great friend of Britain, they're in for a big surprise.

But surely the Americans fought with us should to shoulder against the Kaiser and Hitler? Not exactly. The USA (quite rightly) fought for its own interest in both great wars, not for us.

When we ran out of money after the First World War, Washington seized the chance to force us to limit our Navy, and so began to overtake us as the world's major naval power. We had feared Germany would do this. It is one of the great ironies of history that the USA ended British sea power.

In the blackest months of the Second World War, just after the fall of France.....

They’ve already decided to commit suicide anyway by allowing those who hate their country to overrun it and replace its population.

The Old Country is in desperate need of a re-injection of a Y chromosome but they've chosen bad seed. They invented the mass destruction weapon called socialism but destroyed themselves during testing.

"One of the unfortunate and largely unspoken tragedies of the 17th 18th and 19th centuries was the existence of the British Empire."

LOL!!!!

I think King Philip II, Napoleon, and a whole bunch of Zulu warriors would agree!

Whatever. Without European development many areas of the world would still be struggling to get beyond their primitive lives. The Dutch, English, French, and Spanish did the most to spread civilization with England in the forefront. That is indisputable. I’m much rather we were an English colony that a Spanish or French one.

And Israel owes it's existence to the BRITISH Balfour Declaration. IF you want to start casting aspersions on countries, your own 'Land of Liberty' is far from innocent, as is EVERY country in the world! Countries are run by people. People are prone to sin and errors of judgement.

He is right - the US empire has no allies - just satellites - some more favored than others. Countries Don't Have Friends; Just Interests. It seems teh globalists panicked that the UK may leave the EU and had Obama puppet speak on it. But the USA comes off as hypocritical - it tells the UK to join a sovereignty sapping organization but the USA is a proud guarding of its own sovereignty.

People overseas don't hate America for its freedoms - they hate American foreign policies for their hypocrisies.

Whatever, yourself. No one is denying that America was founded by European powers and that British common law was a foundation of America. No one. And I don’t want to be anyone’s colony. They all had good points - after all - you can get a croissant in Viet Nam - and I get to eat cookies from the Dutch. But all had very bad points. Amritsar, anyone? And, of course, some tribe somewhere is still pissed off at that Manhattan deal.

My only point here is everyone is having a cow over another stupid Obama statement. The Europeans went wild over him and are now having buyer’s remorse. Well, so are we but he’ll be out come January. So everyone should quit hating on America - generally a force for good in the world.

Actually WWI ruined the UK’s Navy and and Empire.
Socialism ruined their future.
We had nothing to do with it. All we did was dig ‘em out. TWICE.
And subisidize their defence for over 50 years.

Reagan supported Thatcher fully in The Falklands war I believe. And if the Brits have scuttled the Royal Navy and he army, they have done hat on their own. I’m no fan of odungo and his position in this is, as always, shameful. But the author gets carried away (maybe he’s covering-his-ass so he won’t be called racist).

We provided scads of logistical and intelligence support. Plenty of stories attesting to this over the years.

Despite the fact that British ships were clogging up Haiphong Harbor trading with N Vietnam while we were at war

You’re right about what Reagan did in the end, but there were friends of Argentina’s military goverment in our government, too.

Jeanne Kirkpatrick, the US UN Ambassador at the time, is ctied as one.

Too many people here attacking Britain and not enough saying ‘enough’ to the relationship between the US and Saudi Arabia.

Do the Saudis have trolls posting here?

No, he’s the same old Peter Hitchens. A Tory. The Tories have never been found of America. Remember 1776? Oddly enough, his late brother, a left-winger, loved America.

And this statement by Obama has inflamed both the left and right of Great Britain. Hey, we had to put up with that freak George Galloway lecturing the Republicans in Congress. It’s often a two way street.

So are you claiming that the Second Reich ought to have one World War 1?

There are none so blind as those who will not see!

“Great” Britain has 4 centuries of disastrous decision making and a legacy of millions dead.

They should be kissing our asses everyday that they still exist as a nation.

Now that the "WOGS" have taken over they really don't have a nation anymore.
