PETER HITCHENS: America isn't our special friend. It ruined our Navy, Empire and future
dailymail.com ^ | 4/24/2016 | Peter Hitchens

Now will we grasp that the United States is not our friend, but a foreign country whose interests are often different from ours?

President Obama's blatant intervention in our internal affairs is not a sudden breach of a soppy 'special relationship'. The USA's only real special relationship is with Saudi Arabia, a 70-year old hard pact of oil, money and power, welded together with such cynicism it out to make up gasp.

Barack Obama's open desire for us to stay inside the EU is by no means the first or worst example of White House meddling here in these islands. Bill Clinton forced us to cave to the Provisional IRA in 1998 and his successor, George W. Bush, continued the policy by making us to Sinn Fein's bidding afterwards.

Washington came close to scuppering our recapture of the Falklands in 1982. And with the current state of our Armed Forces, which can nowadays do nothing without American support, I often wonder how the White House and the Pentagon would behave if Argentina once again seized Port Stanley.

If anyone thinks Hillary Clinton is a great friend of Britain, they're in for a big surprise.

But surely the Americans fought with us should to shoulder against the Kaiser and Hitler? Not exactly. The USA (quite rightly) fought for its own interest in both great wars, not for us.

When we ran out of money after the First World War, Washington seized the chance to force us to limit our Navy, and so began to overtake us as the world's major naval power. We had feared Germany would do this. It is one of the great ironies of history that the USA ended British sea power.

In the blackest months of the Second World War, just after the fall of France.....

Master piece theater has a great show that aired last year called “Indian Summers.” A show taking place in the early 1930s in British India.

Season 2 will come out this summer

False correlation. And omission of Iran from the equation, who is more responsible for 9/11 and ISIS (not solely, but more).

I have no agreement with Hitchens that Wilson’s delayed entry into WWI was in the USA’s own interest either; we should have been in as soon as the Lusitania went down, not two years afterward; and it was the Kaiser who sunk her.

It has been speculated that if the 1920 Washington Naval Treaty hadn’t been signed, by 1930 we would have been at war.

Really, how?

The creation of modern Islamic terrorist regimes can almost exclusively be placed at the feet of the British colonialists. Some examples,

The creation of

1. Palestine - made up by the British to account for the removal of Hashemis from Saudi Arabia - see #2
2. Saudi Arabia - funding and supporting the Wahabbis and Salafis and creating a new country for them because the Hashemis wanted independence
3. Pakistan
4. Can come up with a few more but got to run now.....

That’s like blaming Israel for the “creation” of Islamic terror regimes.

No; those were due to the USSR. It was the USSR who supported Nasser against Israel and the West, which got the whole ball rolling. It was also the USSR that backed Gaddafi against King Idris of Libya.

The idea of “pan-Arabism” came from “pan-Germanism”; the combination of Arab nationalism and Islamic socialism (nationalism + socialism = ?) has only one source as well.

BTW, colonialism did not start with the Brits; and the preceding colonialism of the other European powers was far more harmful, which is why we had a Monroe Doctrine in response to that particular colonialism. Those who distort the history of British colonialism have that in common with Obama.

As is usually the case when a county allies with another for strategic purposes, the long-term effect is contraindicative to the original intent. For example, the U.S. allied with Russia during WWII in order to defeat the Nazis. FDR then gave away the store, i.e., Eastern Europe, to Stalin and the end result was the U.S.S.R.

The U.S. went into Iraq to take out Saddam Hussein. In a sick way, Saddam kept a level of stability in the middle east, namely keeping Iran in check, and now 13 years after we went to war in Iraq, things in the middle east are far worse. Thousands of Americans have died for nothing but a hateful and evil group of people.

Things are worse now than ever.

“One of the unfortunate and largely unspoken tragedies of the 20th Century was the dismemberment of the British Empire. It held in check a lot of evil forces that have become problems for the US since the end of the Cold War.”

Wahabbis were brought into power by the empire. Now the wahabbis rule the middle east.

Psst, you didn’t refute any of my comments on the documented creation of these made-up countries - don’t deflect. I know enough about both the good and the evils of British colonialism - including their creation of modern Islamic states.

To blame USSR and Nasser for the existence of Palestine is rich. Maybe you should read about Glubb Pasha and how the British forces in 1947-48 actively fought WITH the Arab Legion against the nascent Hagannah and Irgun in Israel.

Nice deflection on the others - Saudi Arabia & Pakistan.

You are either uninformed or are dissembling deliberately - and false accusations of calling others democrats don’t absolve you of your ignorance/lying.

That’s a de-facto defense of the USSR and a denial of their role in Islamic colonialism.

Never mind denying that most of the modern problems are actually thanks to the retreat of the British Empire.

I see it - you don’t know what you are talking about and refuse to learn. Glubb Pasha preceded Nasser by 20 years. The British sponsorship of the Mufti of Jerusalem predates his engagement with the Nazis.

In your twisted view of the world, later events in chronological timelines have greater impact than predecessors/causes.

What did the Soviets have to do with the creation of Wahabbism and Saudi Arabia?

Unlike you, I know the history of Islamic movements, states, and causes all too well. I’ve had family attached by the koranimals and friends killed by them.

My interest in this topic extends to more than correcting dishonest people or dissemblers like you. Bye.

But I never forget that the USA is another country, not a friend or even a cousin. Nor should you.

This was addressed to another WWII ally, but it's appropriate.

Just remember...when we both fought side by side?
When Hitler and Mussolini
Had you whipped, and how you cried?
Uncle Sam, he came to help you,
Gave you strength, we gave you all.
And now your great ambition
Is to see our nation fall.

So are you claiming that the Second Reich ought to have won World War 1?

Well, had the Kaiser won that war, there would have been no Hitler and probably no Stalin. France would have survived the loss, as Germany would not have occupied France as Hitler did in WW II.

The United States ruined Britain's "Empire?" How? Sure, we fought for our independence and caused His Majesty to lose the Colonies, but who gave up Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and India? Who is about to give up Scotland and for all practical purposes already has given up Ireland? Not to mention South Africa, Kenya, Belize, Guiana, and a couple thousand islands here and there?

The British Empire WALKED away from those. They weren't wrested from the Crown's grasp in some bloody war. They were GIVEN away. If you want to blame someone, look to your Laborites and appeasers, who spat on the Tories when they tried to hold the Empire together.

They should be kissing our asses everyday that they still exist as a nation.

Even with their bad actions (i.e. Ireland) England has been, BY FAR!!!, the greatest civilizing force in the history of the world. We WERE!!! developed by Britain.

"Washington came close to scuppering our recapture of the Falklands in 1982."

Ok Hitchens, then this would also be true:

Washington came close to scuppering our victory over Germany in 1918.

Washington came close to scuppering our victory over Germany in 1945.

And speaking of scuppering, what in the hell were British merchant ships doing in Haiphong while American and allied forces were being killed? Ya bitch!
