Trump: You Bet I Support Raising Taxes on the Rich
Townhall ^ | 04/21/2016 | Guy Benson

GUTHRIE: Do you believe in raising taxes on the wealthy?

TRUMP: I do. I do – including myself. I do.

That was...this morning, in an interview that featured some other controversial statements.  In fairness to Trump, he's been using the "raise taxes on rich people like me" line for months, embracing Obama-style class warfare tax gimmicks like the 'Buffet Rule.'  But raising taxes on anyone, an outcome Trump just re-endorsed, is not what his formal policy agenda proposes.  Just the opposite.  As we've seen on issues such immigrationabortion and foreign policy, Trump routinely makes clear that he isn't familiar with his own positions.  His stances aren't rooted in conviction, coherent ideological underpinnings or governing philosophy.  They "evolve" and morph depending on how Trump is feeling in any given moment.  Some professed conservatives may be perfectly comfortable voting for a tax-hiking, entitlement reform-opposing critic of Ronald Reagan's tax cuts.  But many Republicans, including a 62 percent majority of GOP primary voters thus far, aren't eager to turn the keys of the party over to someone whose record and current statements build a strong case against the proposition that he's reliable conservative -- or much of a conservative at all.  Parting thought: It's astonishing that this man appeals to people who loathe establishment "insider" types.  Earlier in the answer above, longtime Democratic donor chuckles with multimillionaire celebrity newsman Matt Lauer about all the fancy parties they've attended together with hotshot bankers in New York.  Man of the people.

Trump is talking about the hedge funders - he didn’t clarify that, but, has always said that.

I do.

I’m probably making a mistake thinking that is a serious question but I watched a 45 minute panel with Ted Cruz on a CSPAN money show.

Three wonks and Cruz discussed every possible issue about economics, taxes and business including such esoteric subjects as the Japanese economy.

The CSPAN wonks sat there with their mouths open, totally impressed that Ted Cruz knew all about everything they brought up.

He fully explained his tax plan on that show.

It has the main purpose of restoring jobs via helping small businesses who are over-regulated and over taxed.

Everyone would pay the same percent over a certain minimum income for a family (about 36,000). No longer would a millionaire have a lower rate than his secretary.

He would get rid of the tyrannical IRS that holds our citizens in the crossfire.

I could go on... were you really interested?

> May I suppose you want to also INCREASE SPENDING alongside your HIGHER TAXES plan?

Nope, you may not. I oppose all the spending you do and A LOT MORE.

I'd wager 100:1 that your fiscal conservatism evaporates in a microsecond when it comes to military adventurism. Need I even review your posts to confirm that? I can tell from your attitude that it is true without even having to check.

In other words Cruz would shift the tax burden off of the rich who will pay 10% and pass it on to those who purchase items subject to VAT - the poor and middle class.

Yes, we are not dumb. We got the point exactly. Cruz is pandering to the ridiculously wealthy.

We’ve already HAD a “wall” (call it fence if you want) law.

We haven’t had a will to do it. It was way too radioactive for any politician.

It’s even too radioactive for Cruz.

Trump has kept on talking wall, wall, wall and if he wanted to nuance it away, the time has long passed for that.

Trump pulls off the mask and, he is Hillary!!!

They are one and the same.

When you see Hillary, her legs are so thick because Trump has to double up his body.

It is indeed amazing. I never thought I would see the day that conservatives were in the minority in FR.

I guess we’re all pro abortion, pro tyrannies in the girls room, high taxes, protectionist Trumpets now. Even if you only consider the liberal positions that Trump had advocated in the last 72 hours, he is still a liberal Democrat.

You really have to stop looking at life through a keyhole, or you can only give us plain talk about a distortion.

Reducing or eliminating most deductions and loopholes available to the very rich.

From his posted tax plan.

The “Fair Tax”is not a VAT tax. And it is much less socialist than the income tax.

Oh for crying out loud the same old distortion trifectas or quadfectas.

As long as people argue in simplistic tags, they will make about as much sense as the #BLM crowd.

It's called lying with numbers. Who is the economist and where is his analysis that supports these very impressive and totally incredible promises?

Maybe Cruzoids fall for promises like that - me, I want to see a genuine analysis, with assumptions, and explanations of what is in the model so, like any good engineer, I can drop it off the second floor balcony and see where it breaks.
