Surveillance video shows more than a dozen people doing nothing to help a Chicago bartender as he is attacked, left unconscious on the street and accidentally run over by a taxi.

Marques Gaines later died at a hospital.

The family of 32-year-old Gaines has filed a wrongful death and negligence lawsuit against several businesses and taxi companies in his Feb. 7 death. …

Reminds me of the incident in China on video, where toddler girl gets hit by a car, then the car stops, goes forwards with the real wheels running over her and leaves.

I read about that too. The driver ran over the little girl a second time to make sure she was dead. The reason? A judge in an accidental death case usually awards LESS money to the family than in a grievous injury case. The idea is that the injured person might need care for decades.

But this driver was caught on tape. So I hope he was charged with murder.

Someone penned a book a few decades ago in which he predicted that America would lose her soul (the common, mutually agreed upon traditions, customs, mores and philosophy upon which we were founded) and would one day become “UNGOVERNABLE”.

In case you haven’t been paying attention, WE’RE THERE!!

In ancient Egypt you were just as guilty of murder if you failed to assist someone being attacked who later died of injuries, but in the modern world we have progressed beyond such primitive notions.

This has been happening with increasing frequency here in the USA for well over 100 years.
It's been happening all over the world for much longer than that. (See the story of the Good Samaritan)

Even since becoming "civilized" it has been happening with increasing frequency. (See Kitty Genovese)

Yes, because at least European countries, before the Muzzie invasions, did share common blood and culture. Whereas the US was founded on Ideals, take those ideals away and what do you have? Anarchy City.

“If one must assist someone broken and bleeding in the street, it should be done with appropriate safeguards for one’s own health, such as gloves, mask, etc.”

Indeed. Mrs. L and I both carry first aid kits containing masks, gloves, and eye protection in our vehicles.

Thank you so much for making this a personal issue. It speaks so eloquently of your basing your opinion on feelings rather than reason.

Apparently you believe ignorantly ignoring modern realities is a wise thing to do. I have not spoken my personal viewpoint, but rather voiced a couple of considerations that mitigate against direct personal involvement on part of a bystander.

The reason there are “good samaritan” laws is because of successful lawsuits against bystanders who performed CPR, made a mistake (or weren’t certified), and were legally blamed for a negative outcome.

My personal reaction to this situation would likely be calling 911 and attempting to protect the individual from further harm. My own familiarity with CPR is based on a long-ago class, and therefore I would probably not administer it. But neither would I ignore the situation.

I, however, am wise enough to know that my answer is far from universal.

For an example of the type of cases that have arisen, consider the description found at https://www.verywell.com/no-good-samaritan-1298834

Correct. That “American Thing” was the glue that held this place together and near the golden mean.

John 3:16 states the only reason for any one to perish.

Matthew 25

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ 46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

See Kitty Genovese

Neighbors called the police and chased off the assailant (who finally died in prison a couple of weeks ago).

When no cops responded, he hunted her down to finish the job.

Your welcome.

Refusing to administer a lifesaving action is personal decision, up close, remember it forever, decision. Using a third person voice in your writing does not make it any less personal.

Do you believe that having Certification is protection from a lawsuit? If you incompetently administer CPR and kill someone you could possibly be sued with or without certification.

If your personal choice is to not administer lifesaving CPR, despite knowing how to do so, because you fear a lawsuit then that is your personal choice and you alone must judge if it was worth avoiding a theoretical lawsuit.

I believe that having and maintaining certification for CPR keeps an individual current on how to do the technique, which comes into play in the “knowing how to do so” portion of your response.

With regard to personal versus third person voice, being able to see potential or probable considerations that affect others’ decisions is a key aspect of learning to deal with and overcome such issues. Analysis of human beings cannot be properly performed using only one’s own perspective.

So, by being a Good Samaritan, he got thrown in jail for a couple of days (he got beat up in there too!) and he was out his nice 35mm Nikon camera from smashing it into the head of Obama’s son...

The old saying "No good deed goes unpunished" is there for a reason.

Some years ago a small plane crashed in downtown Detroit. As the pilot lay dying, residents picked his pockets and stole his jewelry.

You're full of crap, there has never been a small plane crash in downtown Detroit...........
