This mom and teacher says strict school discipline for black kids is ‘deplorable’
Washington Post ^ | 4/18/2016 | Valerie Strauss

In many school districts across the country, black students in traditional public schools are suspended at rates much higher than for white students, as this University of Pennsylvania analysis shows. What’s more, some “no excuses” charter schools in urban areas operate with a philosophy that more discipline for black students is better, even for tiny infractions. In this post, Jamila Carter, a mother of three and an early childhood educator in Philadelphia, asks and answers the question of whether black students really need “no excuses” discipline. You can follow her Twitter at @jubimom. This appeared on the Edushyster website of education blogger and activist Jennifer Berkshire, who gave me permission to republish.

by Jamila Carter

There is a sentiment among some folks in the black community that teaching our children respect for authority through strict discipline will save them from falling victim to violence, jail or being killed at the hands of the police.

Historically, black parents, especially those of us in low-income communities have often used strict discipline coupled with love and support as a means to protect our children. So I’m not surprised when I hear of parents who welcome the “no-excuses” discipline methods employed at some urban schools.

The belief is that because of the color of our skin there is no room for mistakes, and in the real world we may not get a second chance. Therefore, the training ground for this dismal reality should extend to the classroom.

I understand why many parents feel the need to use discipline to protect their children, but I reject this notion in the classroom.

Where does/do the father/fathers of Jamila Carter’s three future gang-bangers stand on this question?

suspended at rates much higher

She neglects to state that they commit offenses at a much higher rate.

You’re not supposed to ask that question.

In many school districts across the country, black students in traditional public schools are suspended at rates much higher than for white students, as this University of Pennsylvania analysis shows.

This datum is useless, and likely utter bovine scat. The only valid comparison is whether students in different categories receive the same punishments for the same offenses, not a cumulative "score board" that ignores whether a specific category of student is acting out more.

What’s more, some "no excuses" charter schools in urban areas operate with a philosophy that more discipline for black students is better, even for tiny infractions.

I suspect that the insertion of "black" in that sentence is spurious. These schools are extremely unlikely to be racially selective in their enforcement - and the "no excuses" premise is that everyone lives by the same, very strict, set of rules.

Other than offering up deconstruction practice, I see nothing of value from this screed.

Unfortunately school discipline and suspension is the first time many of these beings are confronted with a reaction to their performance.

The next dozen or so times it is the court system - I refuse to call it the Justice System.

This pattern continues until they cross the wrong person at the wrong time. Then we hear about what a good child they were and how they were turning their life around.

The #black lives matter crowd should look into why with some black parents their kids lives don’t seem to matter.

There is more to lives than life and death. Raising kids to be honest, productive, and good Americans is what life is all about.allowing them to go feral and take up a life of ignorance and crime is condemning your children to a life of misery and hatred.

our history tells us that minor missteps may leave your fate in the balance and questioning authority may get you killed

Assaulting a police officer and trying to take his gun is not "questioning authority".

These kids never learn respect for authority or other people's rights, that's what gets them killed by police (very, very seldom, BTW) and each other (very, very often).

A real dog whistle for me is the moniker ‘early childhood educator’. I know I am going to read something from a Marxist, who shouldn’t get within 100 feet of our children. Marxist PhD’s, training Marxist educators, who in turn propagandize our children at their earliest schools. Heartbreaking.

Go into just about any theater in a “diverse neighborhood” and you will find black teens on the back row talking loudly, on their cellphones, and being oblivious and disrespectful, cutting up and getting into fights. Don’t believe me or disagree. Try it yourself. And sure there are other races that do it but not anywhere near to the same extent. You can ask the white kids to zip it nicely and generally they will. Not so with the others. You migh get jumped or the saggies crowd may pull a gun.

No, of course. They are unable to control themselves and are subject to the rapidly changing whims of their lower order animal functions. They should be allowed to give free rein to their instinctual appetites, such as low-order gratification without regard to consequences.

That’s what this policy is actually saying.

That is exactly what she is saying. But since she can't actually make that argument in public, she is accusing the standards of being racist in nature.

There is no such thing as race. It is entirely culture and the behavior of a culture.

In this case, a culture believes that it should not be expected to excel.
