Freeper Sushiman checking in from Kyushu after Kumamoto quakes
4/18/16 | sushiman

We'd been living in our brand new home for 2 weeks when the first of 2 killer quakes hit our city . I'd experienced myriad quakes in various parts of Japan during my 30 years of living here , but nothing like these . I really thought it was the end of the world when that first quake struck : the house rocked and shook that strongly .

I'm still in a bit of a shock so forgive brevity at this time .

My wife and I survived unscathed , but eveything inside the house was destroyed . It'll be a while before we know if there is any structural damage to our house .

We have been staying with a relative in Fukuoka since Saturday evening and feel very fortunate , especially compared to thousands and thousands of others staying in overcrowded school gyms , etc., or living out of their cars .

I plan to write a full report of my experience in the not too distant future .

The resilience and endurance of the Japanese people continues to amaze me .

Good hearing from you and that you’re all right. The initial numbers we got here were pretty alarming. Hang in there!

Prayers up for you and yours and everyone in the area. I can’t even imagine the how horrific that would be (I am terrified at the very thought of an earthquake). Thank God you’re ok though.

The old Nippon houses of bamboo and wood and paper etc swayed with the quakes so were quite resistant.

The images of the tremendous damage on the news are something else.

Thank the Lord you and your family are safe.

Glad to hear from you, and that you and the Missus are OK.

Prayers for you both to get through the next few weeks with all the readjustments that come with losing your stuff.

What is truly important has survived unscathed, and for that we are thankful.

Both quakes affected our house . We live in Kumamoto city but are close to Mashiki where the 2nd quake was strongest . In fact , Jonan , where our house is , used to be part of Mashiki but became part of Kumamoto minami-ku a few years ago . Also , we had to worry about our old house in Aso that we are in the process of selling . Fortuntately , according to real estate man , no major damage was done .
