Donald Trump: ‘The Laws Are Set’ on Abortion, ‘I Think We Have to Leave It that Way’

Two days after GOP presidential contender Donald Trump caused a firestorm after walking back his statement that women who have illegal abortions should receive some form of “punishment,” he said during another interview that abortion “laws are set,” and they should be left that way until changed.

In an interview on CBS’ Face the Nation – the broadcast of which will be aired on Sunday – Trump again attempted to clarify his views to moderator John Dickerson.

When asked by Dickerson – from a pro-abortion perspective — “What would you do to further restrict access to abortion?” Trump responded, “The laws are set now on abortion and that’s the way they’re going to remain until they’re changed.”

“A question was asked to me. And it was asked in a very hypothetical,” Trump explained about his prior MSNBC interview with Chris Matthews. “And it was said, ‘Illegal, illegal.’ I’ve been told by some people that was an older line answer and that was an answer that was given on a, you know, basis of an older line from years ago on a very conservative basis.”

When Dickerson mentioned a prior Bloomberg interview during which Trump reportedly said he believed abortion should be banned after a certain point in pregnancy, Trump replied, “I would’ve preferred states’ rights. I think it would’ve been better if it were up to the states. But right now, the laws are set….At this moment, the laws are set. And I think we have to leave it that way.”

“Do you think abortion is murder?” Dickerson asked. After considering the question for several moments, Trump responded, “I have my opinions on it, but I’d rather not comment on it.”

“You said you were very pro-life,” Dickerson followed up. “Pro-life means that…abortion is murder.”

Awesome answer by Trump. Home Run. He hit it OUT-OF-THE-PARK. He owned that interview. Like a man handling a baby. </Trumpfanatic>

You might want to worry about who Hillary will appoint.

She won't appoint anyone if Trump appoints her.

Everyone, including you, are putting words in his mouth that he did not say. He said not much we can do about the laws right now but thats only until he becomes president.

Trump misspoke! We’ve got him now!

By all means we must now abandon Trump because the GOPe candidate will be so much better on abortion!

A vote for Trump is a vote for abortion

All any of these political clowns has to say is that they want fewer abortions. It is really quite simple

If we had a minute of silence for each baby that has been aborted in the U.S. since Roe vs Wade, we would have 100 years of silence.

Oh yeah... let's just leave it like that.

Trumpy also tweeted that if elected he was going to rapidly reverse all of the bad things in the U.S. Ummmmm a lot of people might think Abortion is one of those bad things.

“I’d hate to see who Trump would appoint to make/break that decision”

More than likely his pro-abortion sister who is a Federal Judge.

This is what happens when a handful of lawyers substitute their will for the will of our legislators. Their Supreme Arrogance destroys.

And we won't be able to do it by simply overturning them.

Well, yes we can change the law as easily as it was established.

The long term challenge will be to overturn the decades of moral decline that have so many accept that the death of a baby is a "choice"

Some of our more literate contributors might recall this passage from Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles, where the horse-carter, John Derbyville, is speaking of selling his "inheritance":

"Goodbye, my maid," said Sir John, raising his head from his breast as he suspended his nap, induced by a slight excess this morning in honour of the occasion. "Well, I hope my young friend will like such a comely sample of his own blood. And tell'n, Tess, that being sunk, quite, from our former grandeur, I'll sell him the title—yes, sell it—and at no onreasonable figure."

"Not for less than a thousand pound!" cried Lady Durbeyfield.

"Tell'n—I'll take a thousand pound. Well, I'll take less, when I come to think o't. He'll adorn it better than a poor lammicken feller like myself can. Tell'n he shall hae it for a hundred. But I won't stand upon trifles—tell'n he shall hae it for fifty—for twenty pound! Yes, twenty pound—that's the lowest. Dammy, family honour is family honour, and I won't take a penny less!"

I think Trump can be convinced to change his mind; I don’t think Hillary or any of the others can be convinced to change theirs —they are committed to their world view.

The Democrats are smarter than us. They don’t talk about abortion during campaigns and nobody asks them about it.

They were asked. And Bernie the Butcher is pro full term murder. (They didn’t ask a follow up to see if it was OK to murder the newborn...)

And Clinton gave a standard non-answer, also with no follow up.

there is nothing anyone can do until Roe , v Wade is overturned so in reality Trump is right, not that I would expect more cheap shot and bitter comments to stop from the establishment hacks.

Abortion is murder. Add to that the horror of the big
money-making part of selling the body parts & whole
aborted babies. Love of $$$$$$$$$$ - root of all evil.

Not an April Fool's joke.

I was never fooled. The think that kicked me this week was Rush saying abortion will always be legal.

But I know that God will not allow this holocaust to last forever. Abortion is our death sentence.

Well, at least Reagan didn’t talk like this when he was in office, he just reversed Roe v Wade....wait a minute! Reagan wasn’t able to do anything to stop abortion either!

In fact, we have 10x more of it now than ever. What happened, why didn’t Reagan stop it? Or the Bush’s?

Because its now part of our constitutional rights, that’s why. The supreme court made it that way. Its called tyranny, and we are stuck with it for now at least...

For 12 years, the GOPuke had the presidency and both branches of congress. What, pray tell did they do to change the abortion situation?

But, by all means, do pile on Trump.
