Trump names health care and education, security, as the top functions of the federal government

In a moment that seemed to stun even moderator Anderson Cooper, Donald Trump named federal involvement in education and health care as top functions of the federal government, along with national security, at the Milwaukee candidates forum in Milwaukee last night. Apparently unaware that conservatives believe that a federal role in education is unjustified, and that many, including Ted Cruz, want to abolish the Department of Education, and that federal involvement in health care is anathema to his party’s base, Trump spoke of both as among the top three priorities for the feds.

Putting on his surprised face, Cooper attempted to give Trump a chance to address his base. Shoshana Weissmann of the Weekly Standard describes the debacle:

Anderson Cooper tried to clarify. "So in terms of federal government role, you're saying security, but you also say health care and education should be provided by the federal government?"

Trump replied, "yeah, those are two of the things. Yeah, sure. there are obviously many things, housing, providing great neighborhoods—"

Anderson, confused by Trump's response, asked, "aren't you against the federal government's involvement in education? Don't you want it to devolve to states?"

"I want it to go to state. Absolutely," said Trump, entirely flip-flopping on what he said moments earlier.

Cooper replied, "that's not part of what the federal government's—"

Trump interjected, "the federal government, but the concept of the country is the concept that we have to have education within the country and have to get rid of common core and it should be brought to the state level."

Cooper added, "and federal health care run by the federal government?"

Trump said, "health care. We need health care for our people.

So why would his web page say one thing, and he say something else in an interview??? Inquiring minds wanna know....

I freely admit that he's not a practiced, polished politician. He admits that. I will presume to speak for all Trumpsters and say that we all know that. But that's why we like him.

We don't need yet another polished politician. Especially another first term senator, Harvard educated, constitutional scholar. Been there. Done that. It doesn't work.

What's the definition of insanity?

You certainly “know” a whole lot about me. I actually am not anti-Trump. But, I am concerned that he cites these as priority Federal issues. Restoring our government to its rightful role is important to me.

My opinion is that his staff writes his website in a way that republicans will support him.... and when he speaks in public he often says what he really thinks.

Okay....have it your way. I don’t really care. The one thing I don’t do is go calling someone anti-religious from the git go. I don’t really need to go back and forth with you, frankly.. you’re just not that important to me in the scheme of things. I’d still like to wish you a nice day.

The federal government allocated approximately $154 billion on education in fiscal year 2015.
You think that’s completely going away? It needs to be reduced and improved 1st.

And occasionally he’ll mention “the wall” and they are all back in his fold.

“Hey Trumpster Trolls - what say you?”

This Trumpster Troll just wants him to do what he says on illegal immigration. That’s why I’m voting for him.

I don’t care about anything else. I do expect that if anyone but Trump gets elected president that the federal government will continue to grow unimpeded whether it’s a democrat or a republican. I don’t know if government will get any smaller under a president Trump, but it will be a lot of fun to watch, because people think it might.

Read the last sentence of section 7 where Mr. Bring Back American Jobs calls for the import of foreign made pharmaceuticals. While you're at it, ignore the 2000 interview with Larry King where he advocates universal healthcare, says he's 'very liberal on social issues,' then has his campaign deny he's previously been for socialized medicine in an interview with Forbes last July.

Why would anyone believe this weather vane?

Does that not demonstrate that he hires the right people?

Actually, the three top priorities in the Constitution are protecting our borders from invasion by establishing an army and navy, dealing with foreign affairs and trade, and establish a Post Office and post roads.

There is zero mention about "health care" or "education" or a million other things the feds now do with impunity.

Because what the man has said over the years has changed so much. You’re in for massive disappointment from this man.

Easy to say but not based on the issues....you see our govt is involved in healthcare and education right now.......... you first need to tackle what the govt IS doing before you can get back to the Constitution so maybe he has more understanding then you think

Makes sense. The guy is a big government liberal, after all. The scary thing is how many people on FR will now fall all over themselves saying how "Trump is right" or "It doesn't matter what he says. He'll govern as a conservative."

The IQ of this place has dropped about 20 points over the past few months.
