“Voices Now Demanding Apology from Trump Who Calls Tienanmen Incident a “Riot” " (My Translation)
NHK Television News, Tokyo, Japan (from Japanese original) ^ | 13 March 2016 | NHK Network International News Staff

(トランプ氏の天安門事件「暴動」発言 謝罪求める声)

(“Voices Now Demanding Apology from Trump Who Calls Tienanmen Massacre a “Riot”)

(Translation from the original Japanese by FReeper AmericanInTokyo):

”In the most recent TV debate between candidates for the Republican nomination for President in the USA, Mr. Trump referred to it as a “riot” (boudou: 暴動) when Chinese students stood up in Tienanmen Square and requested freedom, in Beijing, China in 1989. Real estate magnate Trump was answering a question from the moderator in the March 10 debate in Miami, with respect to the suppression of Chinese university students. They were only pleading for freedom but were by way of armed force crushed by the Chinese Communist Party in Tienanmen Square in June 1989, resulting in many deaths, the “Tienanmen Massacre.”

In that reply, Trump said that he “did not support the government’s action” but stated that “a strong government was able to put down the ‘riot’ (sic) with strength. That shows you the power of strength.”

Because Trump in his response termed the uprising of the students in requesting democratization in China as a "riot", a Chinese dissident who lives in exile in the USA has issued a protest on Saturday.

“For many Chinese, it is simply an unacceptable statement by Trump. It is an insult to those who stood up to oppose the Communist Party of China but were crushed, dissident and democracy leader Dr. Wei Jingsheng (魏京生) stated. He called on Mr. Trump to apologize for it.

In addition, another former Tienanmen student survivor and Chinese dissident exiled in the USA Dr. Yang Jianli(楊建利) (and others) also have come forward and issued a statement demanding an apology from Donald Trump. “His statement takes a lot of nerve. The attitude towards (the use of) power held to by Trump is a contradiction of the values of the United States. This is totally unbefitting and unbecoming of an American president,” his statement read, as voices increasingly demanded Mr. Trump’s apology over his statement.” END OF TRANSLATION

“Trump should apologize or “clarify” his statement.”

Yes, he should at the VERY LEAST.

Got this from FR thread (Post #50 link)

“..Trump answered, “When the students poured into Tiananmen Square, the Chinese government almost blew it. Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength. That shows you the power of strength. Our country is right now perceived as weak … as being spit on by the rest of the world –” (snip)

P.S. I wish the Chinese government had blown it. I wish the 1989 uprising had led to the toppling of that cruel, murderous, despicable regime ..”

more: http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/432036/donald-trump-tiananmen-square

Donald Trump is saying China was horrible - that’s good, BUT he precedes it by saying the Chinese govt. almost blew it. Huh?

Then he seemed to think the “viciouis” STRENGTH part was a good thing.

It reminds me of when he repeatedly says Planned Parenthood does some good things.

In fairness, Trump said the above in a 1990 interview, but RECENTLY he said:

“..A couple of months ago, it was pointed out to Trump that Putin kills journalists who displease him. Trump answered, “I think our country does plenty of killing also.” This is exactly the moral equivalence I learned from the Left, when I was growing up. I rejected it. Because it’s an abominable lie.” (from above linPk

When Trump says: “our country does plenty of killing also” - it is unpatriotic. We don’t need another president going around the world on an apology tour.

Trump’s logic is so flawed, I would be really nervous to see him Commander-in-Chief. After the Obama disaster, we MUST do better!

Should say Post #51, NOT #50.

Let’s see Trump is in the KKK and he is all in favor of the massacres. You know who should apologize for the massacre? The people who committed the atrocity. The Damn Chicoms. Then maybe next up is a thousand points of light Bush. Those students thought America had their back.

Don’t care for ex-pats

Don’t care for Chinese dissidents

Care for US citizens only

Work with too many foreigners who have their hands out for something from us or take US jobs.

The dissidents can go home and fight. Whining here does no good for anyone.

Foreigners should stay out of US politics.

Americans first, foreigners last.

So? They were...what is your point. What part of Trumps description of the government action as vicious do you not understand? The rabid cruzbots have no honor, they have sold their soul for nothing.

In three years nobody eill remember Ted Cruz name except perhaps as a vile, corupt politician of the old order.

Some idiot sat down and coordinated this BS across all these Countries. And all for absolutely nothing. Isn’t Trump’s big speech about how he’s going to bend China over? Every speech, in fact. It doesn’t wash.

Totally avoided the issue genius.

He called the people that were murdered rioters which they were not. Calling them rioters provides the excuse to crush them.

You can’t address a simple truth without calling people names. You speak of honor, you don’t know what the word means as evidenced by your own posts. You go off about Cruz which has zero to do with this issue. Use your own brain instead of mindlessly parroting crap.

Not to butt in, but... the reason you are being attacked is because you have posted something that might reflect negatively upon Trump.

We have political discourse in our home as well, but there is no longer any room for dissension among FReepers. They are slavishly devoted to a man who believes that China had the right to use the force it did, and wishes that he could take a tank for crowd control at the next Nuremberg rally he holds asking for loyalty oaths from his lemmings, I mean supporters.

Honest discussion of articles or events is no longer permitted on FR. I very rarely read comments any more, and almost never post as it leads to numerous, circuitous screeds extolling the greatness of whatever Trump says or does. I would not have posted this, but, you sounded so genuinely confused about Free Republic’s mission.

I miss Free Republic, and hope that it will return after the election silly season. I have watched a few elections on this board but have never encountered the level of vitriol that permeates every corner of FR today.

You win trade by lowering barriers and competing not by raising barriers. The US is not an island anymore. You can’t hide from the world, it will simply pass you by if you try. Japan was supposed to be the great trade predator in the 80’s and was going to own the US. It didn’t work out that way. It won’t work that way with China either. Slaves have a way of throwing off their “masters” and as their standard of living increase so will their costs bring them in line with the rest of the world.

If you want to compete, start by removing the yoke on American business, endless rules and taxes.

No, it isn’t too much to ask that your leader have some self discipline and reflection before spouting off stuff that is factually wrong and sends out the wrong message around the world. Calling the people that were murdered “rioters” gives excuse to why they were murdered.

Look how beholden to this joke of a candidate people are...

They are actually refusing to admonish this man for saying something so stupid about the protesters attacked by the PLA...

How on earth can someone be so blind, so politically corrupt that something as basic as suppression of free speech is viewed as some quasi good thing...?

Please look somewhat critically at what this man is saying. Look at his pattern... He is an extremely dangerous individual whom cares about nothing but himself.

Voices would be demanding an apology if Trump commented on the pleasant weather.

This is what his opposition has been reduced to.

I guess Chicago planned riots didn’t work and now its off to the next attempt to slime Trump before Tuesday. I hope Trump wins and wins big on Tuesday.

Since 1989 we have been trading with China as if none of this happened. They have the worst human rights record and BOTH political parties are guilty. We have made the Chicoms very rich and very strong. They are evil. Now we are worried about a couple poorly chosen words from a real-estate developer years ago. It’s absurd. Honestly, we should have never traded with China until they cleaned up their record which they would never do. What we should have done is actively worked to overthrow China’s government. A lot of Republicans argued at the time that they will be changed by doing business with us and miraculously be transformed or overthrown by their people but its only acted to tighten their grip over their people.

Ironically, if Trump is elected he will do more to weaken China than anybody else in the last 40 yrs. Cut off some of that 500 billion they use to build up military and enslave their people. I would love to see that regime weakened economically. Nobody else will do damn thing but kiss their butts.

I don’t think it’s ignorance, I think he’s envious. He wishes he had the kind of power the Chinese have.
