Cruz: I'm the only one who has beaten Trump
CNN ^ | February 21, 2016 | Byron Wolf

Posted on 02/21/2016 3:37:18 PM PST by GodGunsGuts

(CNN)Ted Cruz argued that since he's the only candidate who has been able to beat Donald Trump, he's the candidate conservatives should turn to as the chief alternative to the businessman.

"It is now apparent that the only campaign that can beat Donald Trump and that has beaten Donald Trump is our campaign," he said in an interview on "State of the Union" with CNN's Jake Tapper.

Cruz argued that while Trump has "consistently managed to score in the 20s and 30s," many voters view him unfavorably and are concerned about his chances in a general election.

"An awful lot of Republicans are very concerned that Donald Trump is not the right candidate to go head-to-head with Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders," Cruz said. "And as the field narrows, we're seeing more and more people coming to us."

Cruz dismissed the idea that he underperformed in South Carolina, a state with a strong religious and evangelical population -- both attributes that should favor him. And he downplayed Trump's victory, arguing that his lead narrowed in recent weeks and the margin of victory should have been greater.

Cruz also swiped that Rubio should have done better in South Carolina against Trump because the Florida senator had endorsements from the state's popular Sen. Tim Scott, and Gov. Nikki Haley. Cruz argued that when he had endorsements from evangelical leaders in Iowa, he was able to beat Trump, not place second...

I’m sorry. I’m not feeling well and wasn’t clear. I was referring to the scorched earth policy of some posters trying to destroy Cruz. I agree that we need decent men in the race.

Who knows? Possibly. What are the general laws protecting against? Maybe those apply?

“Vote for the Tea Party candidate who has stuck by his conservative principles and beaten Donald Trump!”

And those “principles” include cheating and lying. Funny, in my list of “conservative principles,” those words do not exist! Ted Cruz is like a fart in a whirlwind! Now one ever “smelled” him.

I’ m afraid Hillary will be the next one to beat Trump, because she will use the argument that he doesn’t know the ways of Washington, as if that knowledge is a good thing. But enough of the morons in this country will buy it as a legitimate reason to vote for her.

Let me get this straight. Cruz did great in South Carolina. But Trump should have done better.

As an Aerospace Mechanical Engineer, I "paint by the numbers" ...

The vote tally difference between Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio was 0.20 percent ... a minor difference ...

a "statistical tie" in the eyes of folks who work with numbers (such as engineers, navigators etc) ...

That being said, as a staunch Ted Cruz Florida campaigner, I'm nevertheless compelled to congratulate Rubio (whom I despise) for his mathematical second place South Carolina finish ...

All that being said, I'll also say that it's a "mathematical certainty" that Donald Trump ...

benefited by South Carolina's open primary where many (exact number unknown)

Code Pink, 9-11 Truther Lunatics, Abortion Mill Planned Parenthood supporters and Black Lives Matter "Community Organizers" voted for ...

The Donald.

And whether they openly admit it or not ...

EVERY Donald Trump supporter (with any intelligence) quietly knows that I speak "da truth" on this subject.

Nevertheless ... my "genuine" political battlefield congratulations to Donald Trump ...

for enlisting the Armies of Mordor to defeat "Reagan Conservatism" in South Carolina

As General George S. Patton, Jr. would opine ...

Victory is victory ...

=============================

Ted Cruz invested significant time (one year), money and organization in fighting to win South Carolina ...

I was personally invited to campaign there as a volunteer ...

Somehow, Ted Cruz came in third ... DEEPLY disappointing ... even though it's a statistical tie with Marco "Amnesty" Rubio ...

I would project tonight that Ted Cruz feels as badly as General Washington after one of his many Revolutionary War defeats ...

or as badly as General Eisenhower after the NAZIs kicked America's @ss at Kasserine Pass ...

Will Ted Cruz learn to effectively counter-punch to VICTORY like the U.S. Navy at the Battle of Midway ?

Ten Million still-fightin' and PRAYING Ted Cruz campaigners say "YES" !

Wonderfully ...ALL of America's Conservative Patriots have tasted VICTORY in South Carolina where the "unsinkable" U.S.S. Jeb Bush juggernaut ...

was SUNK with HEAVY ($ 100 million) losses ...

Many Cruz supporters, honestly myself included, now find Trump so repugnant that we will sit out the general election if he is the nominee.

Lol...well aren't you special?

Another Cruz snowflake melting in the heat of a stronger opponent...

You can call me whatever names you feel like, it doesn’t matter. What might matter is alienating enough fellow insurgent voters to wind up losing in the end.

I’m not voting for an ass just because he jumps behind an R label and runs Jeb out of the campaign by perpetuating “Bush lied, people died.” But you do what you want, it’s your vote.

All the best to you.

Have you noticed the Trump Cult isn’t interested in any form of discussion. All they can do is ridicule, attack and denigrate anyone opposed to Trump. I wonder if any of them is bright enough to consider the possibility that the well will be so poisoned by the general election that it will effect Trump’s totals?

No, I haven't noticed that. Probably because it's a gross exaggeration. Do you think they're supporting Trump simply because of his charisma. Look what Trump has promised to do about immigration, terrorism, taxes, and trade.

Sure there's plenty of name-calling on both sides. You yourself hypocritically engaged in exactly what you're decrying in your paragraph above. To pretend that there is not legitimate debate occurring is the height of spin, and to talk down to Trump supporters, implying that they're not bright enough to see the big picture, is typical of your ilk. Let's not forget that Jim Robinson himself is apparently one these misguided, pro-Trump dimbulbs.

Good luck with the oversimplified bombast, it's been serving you knee-jerk Trump-haters very well thus far...

I favor Cruz, but am not averse to Trump. I have seen no evidence of any kind that Cruz participated in some dirty trick in Iowa. His staff may have, or have been overly excited about the prospect, later disproved, that Carson was about to end his candidacy. Congressman King did mention that he passed along what he believed to be accurate (according to him) information about Carson.

Since you are absolute about your conviction that Cruz directly participated in a dirty trick, it would be helpful to those on this forum if you could provide documentation. Thank you for your effort to correct my uninformed analysis at your convenience.

“He lost the evengelicals to Trump”

Trump got 33% of the vote. There are a lot more Evangelicals than that. The Evangelical vote was split between Trump, Cruz, Rubio, and Carson.

SC is an open primary state. There were liberals voting in this too. Some do not care to pick the Dem candidate and voted in the Republican primary to pick who they hate the least. Some are actually crossover votes, many of which went to Trump, which is a good predictor of the general election. I think a lot of Dems will vote for him over the socialist or felon who gets the Dem nomination.

Cruz’s campaign engaged in the Iowa dirty trick. I don’t know if Cruz okay’d it or knew about it, but he took no action against the employees who did it, and in the end he is responsible for what his campaign does.

The fallout from that action is on his shoulders and no one else’s.

But he absolutely did lie in his own voice and words at his morning South Carolina press conference in which he maintained that all that was done was a relaying of a news report, when that is not what was done at all.

In denying that his campaign told voters Carson was suspending his campaign while they were in the act of voting, he lied.

Ted Cruz’s campaign had no business whatsoever speaking for Carson’s campaign. That’s his bad.

That being said, if Cruz wins the nomination, he gets my vote. But he won’t get my primary vote.

“In a caucus, which does’t mean squat. Win any REAL elections lately Rafael?”

You do not make any sense. Cruz has repeatedly won elections. He was the underdog against the GOPe Dewhurst in Texas. Trump has not ever run for office.

In fact Cruz has only run twice for office and has never lost.

He is also the first Hispanic to ever win any presidential caucus.

If you want to promote Trump, fine. But you may want to stick to his strengths which are business experience, media influence, name recognition, and the ability to stand up to the MSM.

Winning elections is not something he has done YET. It looks good for him, but the primaries and election have a long way to go.

I have no respect for Trump or his cult. Trump is only slightly better than Hillary or Bernie and the cult is on a par with your typical democrat. In fact many are democrats and angry moderates that aren’t the least bit concerned with Conservatism or Conservative principles. This is purported to be a Conservative forum but it’s been taken over by yahoos not the least bit concerned with those principles. This is just another example...admittedly a small one...of our institutions being subverted by the left.

We all knew Trump was going to win SC. He won pretty well. I would say it was a double. My analogy before that one was 30-40% was a base hitter. A home run would have been anything over 40%. Less than 30% would have been a strike. He got 33% AND all of the delegates. That’s pretty good. Ideally any candidate wants more than 50%, but that is tough with so many candidates still in the race.

Trump keeps his momentum. The race is his to lose.

My estimate is Trump has 75% or better chance to get the nomination.

Cruz and Rubio both have 10% chance or better, with Cruz having a slight edge.

Cruz has a better ground game and is better financed. He has loyal tea party supporters. Rubio is known by tea party supporters as a traitor.

If Trump comes in first in Texas or Florida, it will almost certainly make him the lock. If Trump wins Texas, it increases Rubio’s chance of being VP. If Trump wins Florida it increases Cruz’s chance of being VP. If Trump wins both, neither will be VP. Cruz and Rubio must win their home states to stay viable.
